Alan Russel Alexander died April 28 at his residence. He was 80. Dr. Alexander, a lifelong Cleveland resident, was a graduate of Shaw High School, Western Reserve College and Western Reserve Medical School. He was a clinical faculty member at Case Western Reserve Medical School and a pediatrician who treated thousands of children during his 40-year career. He was known for his gentle, reassuring manner and good nature. He served as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force before beginning his medical practice in Cleveland. He loved music of all sorts and played the piano. In the 1980's he served on the Cuyahoga County Board of Health. His wife of nearly 60 years, Elizabeth Betty Gubelmann, died in January. 2010. He is sorely missed by his daughter Nan Alexander of Cleveland Heights; his son Robert Joy of Midland, Tx.; his son Andrew Anne of Columbus, and his grandchildren Corwin and Sylvia Kates, and Benjamin, Steven, Evan and Ryan Alexander. In lieu of flowers the family suggests gifts to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Northern Ohio Chapter, 4635 Richmond Rd., Suite 103, Cleveland 44128. Services will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, May 5 at Fairmount Presbyterian Church. On Thursday, May 5 a public reception will occur from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m at the Cleveland Skating Club, 2500 Kemper Road Cleveland, OH 44120.
