Alice-Mae Suits

Alice-Mae Suits (née Buell), beloved wife for 61 years of the late Thomas Suits, passed away August 17, 2022 at the age of 89. She is survived by daughter Elizabeth Kaufman (Stephen), son William Suits (Amy), grandsons Michael and Evan Kaufman (Mike Walter), and sister-in-law Sandy Aaron (Dick). Born in Portland, Oregon on September 18, 1932, Alice-Maegrew up in the Pacific Northwest. She received her undergraduate degree from Bucknell University and her Masters in Social Work at Columbia University.  Alice-Mae met the love of her life Tom on a trans-Atlantic voyage during their college years. Alice-Mae and Tom spent the majority of their married life in Storrs, Connecticut, moving to Shaker Heights in 2012.

Alice-Mae devoted her professional and personal life to caring for others through a long career in social work, primarily with elementary school children. Alice-Mae always made sure the children knew there was someone to listen if they had a problem. She was generous with her time, and her warmth and kindness impacted many lives. To the best of our knowledge, everyone who knew her well was fond of her.

Alice-Mae was passionate about human rights and was always on the cutting edge of societal change in the arc toward social justice.  She was a talented knitter, rugger, and quilter. She spent many afternoons knitting scarves and hats for local charities and prayer shawls for her church family.  She was active in P.E.O., an organization dedicated to financial support of women’s educational efforts. She loved music and enjoyed singing in her church choirs in both Storrs, CT and Shaker Heights, OH.  Alice-Mae will be greatly missed by her family and friends.  A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, August 20 at 2:00 PM at Plymouth Church, of Shaker Heights UCC, located at 2860 Coventry Rd.  Donations in her memory can be made to the Plymouth Church music ministry, P.E.O.
