Andrew Duncan McComb, Jr., was born August 20, 1947, to Faye Melissa Bowman & Andrew Duncan McComb, Sr., and his older sister, Jeannie. He grew up on Douglas Rd. in Wickliffe, Ohio. He graduated from Wickliffe High School in 1965. Soon after he and his family moved to Mentor, Ohio. Following high school, he attended Cleveland State University. He was employed at Brooks Oil Company where he met Jacqueline Marie Welcheck, whom he married August 31, 1968. Before they were married Andrew chose to enlist in the United States Army. During his service, he received medical training and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. It was in that capacity that he served in Vietnam between 1968-1969. He earned numerous commendations, including a Bronze Star. From there he went to Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. His oldest daughter Melissa Ann was born at St. Anne's Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, on January 25, 1970. A little over a year later, Charlene Marie came along when her dad was stationed in Fort Rucker, Alabama. Soon after, Andrew was honorably discharged from the Army. He took a job at the V.A. Hospital in Cleveland where he worked in the intensive care unit until 1986. Drew moved to Eastlake, Ohio around this time. On September 15, 1972, he had a son, Gordon John named after Gordon's maternal grandfather to whom Andrew was close born in Lake West Hospital in Willoughby, Ohio. Jennifer Lynn, his youngest daughter, came into his life for a too brief time on October 13, 1973. He lost her shortly after in early 1974 to SIDS. During this time frame his sister got married to Don Cameron, a United States Marine, and they provided Andrew with several nieces and a nephew: Jessica, Joyce, Jason, and Julie. He and Jackie divorced in August of 1990. From here we will just highlight births and marriages, and then come back and fill in a few details. His first grandson, Steven Matthew McComb, was born October 9, 1990, to Charlene. He married Earlyn Thompson on July 27, 1991, which gained him three more children: Alison, Mike Ian and Amy. The year 1991 was a big year for him, as it also brought him a personal knowledge of his Lord and Savior. Gordon John followed in his father's footsteps, deciding to serve his country, joining the United States Marine Corps. in early 1991. His second grandson, Shawn Garrett Lewis, was born August 15, 1991, to Charlene just a short time after his marriage to Earlyn. On April 13, 1993, his third grandson, Rory Michael McComb, was born to Melissa. Krystan, his adopted first granddaughter, came into the family in July of 1993 through Gordon. Charlene gave him his fourth grandson, Timothy Allen McComb, on July 28, 1993. Andrew's second granddaughter, Lucia Dawn, was born February 8, 1995, to Gordon. Grandson number five, Zachary, was Drew's birthday present on August 20, 1996. This is Gordon's son. His sixth grandson, Tyler, was born October 10, 1999, to Alison. On November 17, 2001, Andrew's middle daughter, Charlene, married Ralph Doles. He gained four grandchildren: Kimberly, Victoria, Emily, and Nathan. His seventh grandson, Trevor, was born October 16, 2004, to Alison and Mike. His eldest daughter Melissa and Dave Webb made a commitment July 2005. He gained another son-in-law when Alison married Mike Miller on September 10, 2005. Andrew received grandson number eight, Terrence, on March 26, 2007. His ninth grandson, Winston, made his debut on 7-7-07. Winston's parents were Melissa McComb and Dave Webb. And to round things off Andrew's tenth grandson, David, was adopted by Alison and Mike on June 15, 2008. David was 16 at the time. In 2010 Shawn joined the United States Marines as did Steven in 2011, following both their grandfather and their uncle in service to their country. Gordon married the love of his life, Julie, on September 9, 2011. Wow! Those are a lot of highlights. Let us fill in some of the details... as was mentioned Andrew married Earlyn Thompson, a co-worker at Cleveland VA Hospital, on July 27, 1991. He then gained three more children: Alison Dianne Thompson 12, Ian Michael now Michael Ian Thompson 10, and Amy Denise Thompson 7. They honeymooned in the Bahamas and Cancun, Mexico, despite Andrew's dislike for water and swimming, and spent many vacations in Cancun in years to come. He was working at Denis Copy as a technician, fixing broken copy machines, and dearly loved the pick-up truck he bought for that job. He started unintentionally faithfully attending Cedar Hill Baptist Church soon after the marriage, became a member, and really enjoyed singing in the choir. By the end of 1991 Andrew had quit that job, and by the end of 1992, he had again started working as a nurse through Choice Nursing Services, helping sick people with his caring attitude. He also worked at Whitecliff Manor now Cedarwood Plaza in Cleveland Heights. On June 13, 1992, Amy Denise Thompson, went to be with the Lord, as the result of being hit by a car that did not stop at the traffic light when she was crossing the street. Andrew agreed with the decision to turn off the respirator. On October 10, 1999, Michael "Tyler" Miller was born. He enjoyed visiting his grandma and grandpa's house. Andrew started working at Sahlani Brothers, Inc., in Cleveland Heights early in 2001. He loved his boss and co-workers and seeing both regular customers and other people who shopped at that convenience store. That is the year he broke his foot when coming down off the garage roof after checking for leaves. It bothered him mostly during rainy days. On October 10, 2004, Mathan "Trevor" Miller was born. Mike Thompson graduated from Kent State University in May 2005, and came to live with Andrew and Earlyn in August, 2007, making it easier on Andrew. Mike cleaned the garage, organized the basement and either helped mow the lawn or shovel snow. On March 26, 2007, Malachi "Terrence" Miller was born. Andrew had a stroke in August of 2009 with no ill effects, but the Lord used that event to help medical personnel discover kidney cancer. After they removed one half of his kidney in January of 2010, he started oral chemotherapy around September of 2010, switching to intravenous chemotherapy around May of 2012. He retained his hair, which he was excited about. He was really happy when he received the news on July 3, 2012, that the treatment was working; and the areas of cancer had not increased. On July 9, 2012, Andrew was driving to work when a car turned left into him. After he was admitted to the hospital, he went into a coma and never regained consciousness. The respirator was turned off, and he went to Heaven with His Lord at 10:10pm on July 11, 2012. Andrew loved to cook; and recent specialties were deviled eggs, baked beans, spaghetti sauce, and funny cake. He also enjoyed bowling, square-dancing, and playing euchre cards. Laugh as long as you breathe, Love as long as you live The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation for the many acts of kindness shown them, whether it was being Andrew's friend, visiting him in the hospital, giving them sympathy or help after Andrew's homegoing, or helping prepare for his funeral service. May the Lord bless all of us with the peace of knowing that Andrew is waiting for us to join him in a glorious place with the Lord that sacrificed His life for our sin. Andrew D. McComb, Jr., 64, of Cleveland Heights previously Mentor born August 20, 1947, went to Heaven on July 11, 2012. He served in Viet Nam and worked as a nurse at the VA Hospital, Cleveland.
