Barbara Fisher Perris of Cleveland died peacefully Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at Judson Park following a brief illness. Barbara was 91 years old, having lived a life filled with family, faith, words, and humor.
She and her late husband, Donald L. Perris, were longtime residents of Gates Mills. A lover of beauty in all its forms, Barbara was known for her straightforward nature.
A longtime parishioner and lector at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Gates Mills, she was a lover of books, moviesa�"especially romantic comediesa�"the Cleveland Orchestra, Sanibel Island, the British Isles, and cats. She spent many happy years shelling the beaches of Sanibel Island, where she served as Atrium Condominium Association president, and her family continues to enjoy the aggregations of shells she assembled in her Sanibel home.
Barbara was born December 20, 1922, in Cleveland to Louis Phillip Fisher and Dora Germaine Fisher. She was the younger sister of Louis Fisher (Jane) and John Fisher (Marian), both of whom predeceased her. Barbara was a lifelong Clevelander and a graduate of Villa Angela Academy.
She met her husband when both worked as reporters at The Cleveland Press during World War II. She was married for 60 years to Donald L. Perris, president and chief executive officer of Scripps Howard Broadcasting Company from 1974 to 1988, who died in 2006.
Barbara passed on her love for the written word to her three children: Katherine Torgerson (Kenneth), David Perris (companion Carol Dronsfield), and Barbara Anne Perris (companion Jeffrey Yablonka), all of whom pursued careers in media and publishing.
Barbara was known as Bama by her beloved grandchildren: Travis Kinsey (Elizabeth Baird Kinsey), Leslie Segal (Zachary Segal), Kirstin Knight, and the late Ryan Torgerson ( wife, Paige). Bama was also great-grandmother to eight: Brandon, Sterling, and Kellen Knight; Hazel, Louella (Lulu), and Pearl Segal; and Brett and Heidi Torgerson.

Funeral services will be held at 1PM, Thursday, April 3rd at Brown-Forward, 17022 Chagrin Blvd., Shaker Hts., OH., WHERE FRIENDS MAY CALL, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 2ND FROM 4-6 pm. Interment Gates Mills South Cemetery.
