Barbara Scovil

Barbara Scovil (nee Baker), age 101, died peacefully July 1, 2024 in Naples, FL. She was born May 22, 1923 in Cleveland, OH to Robert E. Baker and Eva M. Baker. Beloved wife of the late Samuel K. Scovil. Dear mother of Emily S. Eklund (Donald); Malcolm H. (deceased); Samuel K. III; and Alexander C. (Katherine). Proud grandmother of 13 and 15 great-grandchildren. Dear sister of the late Katherine B. Spring and Emily B. Shane. The family is especially grateful for her loving caregivers of many years, Virginia and Teddy Eco.

She was "a woman for all seasons". Educated at Hathaway Brown School in Shaker Heights where she grew up and then at Smith College in MA. She met the love of her life in eighth grade and married him in 1944. They shared over 60 years together. Above all she loved him and her children and made a warm home for them in Gates Mills and then Naples, FL. Her children knew she was always there for them in good and challenging times.

The loss of her teenage son, Mal, in 1964 and then her husband in 2010 were great sorrows in her life. She faced them bravely, as well as the personal suffering of her own dementia.

She was a loyal and devoted friend to many. She kept in touch with the best of them almost everyday, sharing many laughs. She was always excited to meet new people-truly interested in others and putting all at ease. A great listener! A terrific hostess!

There was so much to savor in life! - Her gardens and nature, the Naples beach, summers on the island on Lake Temagami cruising in her row boat, world travel with Sam, Christmas celebrations, chocolate. She was all in favor of "Eat Dessert First", shared with her favorite dog, Spunky. She always had a book in hand; a home decorating, gardening and needlepoint project ongoing.

She had a talent for business, finance and investing. Had she been born a generation later, she would likely have run her own business. She was a behind the scene advisor and outfront helpmate to her husband throughout his career.

She took her membership in Shaker Lakes Garden Club, Cleveland Botanical Garden and the Garden Club of America seriously and had a role in the project transferring management of Cleveland Lakefront Parks from the city to the state of Ohio in the 70s. Major improvements followed as can be seen today.

She was also an active alumna of Hathaway Brown School and member of the 20th Century Club.

She took such joy in life, and all it offered! We are so blessed that she shared herself and the joy with us all.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations to the Cleveland Botanical Garden, 11030 East Blvd., Cleveland, OH 44106.

Burial services will be private. A celebration of her life will occur at a later date.
