Becky Smythe

Jane "Becky" Smythe, age 73, died October 22nd, 2010 at her home after a long battle with breast cancer. Becky was married 53 years to Jeffrey H. Smythe, was the mother of Christopher E. Smythe Suzanne of Shaker Heights, Ohio, Alison L. Smythe of Cleveland Heights, Ohio and Dana S. Hollister David of Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Becky was the grandmother "Nonnie" of Douglas H. Smythe, Hannah E. Smythe and Katherine O. Smythe and the sister of Peter Raisbeck Peggy of Alamo, California and Elizabeth Raisbeck Zell Steever of Noank, Connecticut. Becky was the valedictorian of her graduating class at Darien High School and matriculated to Smith College. She married Jeff in 1957, spent two years with him in the Air Force, and settled in Cleveland. In addition to being a homemaker Becky was a noteworthy community volunteer. Throughout her life she was active on numerous civic Boards and Committees, Most notably as a Board Member of the Junior League of Cleveland, Editor of the Junior League Magazine, and winner of the Ruth Lucas Award for JL Volunteer of the Year. She served on the Junior Committee of the Cleveland Orchestra, was Co-Chair of the WVIZ Auction, and helped establish the Call for Action Community Hotline. Becky also served on the Board of the Office of Consumer Affairs for the City of Cleveland, the Sunbeam White Elephant Sale Board, the Citizens League, and Friends of Shaker Square. She was an active volunteer at the Cleveland Museum of Art. In her spare time, Becky was an avid world traveler, skier, sailor, gardener, birder, sheller, and duplicate bridge player. This wonderful balance, together with her wonderful smile and empathy, made her beloved by all that knew her. She is going to be greatly missed. She was a member of the Kirtland Country Club, The Garden Club of Greater Cleveland, Ms Management Investment Club, and The Intown Club.
