Betty Newman

November 11, 1924 — August 6, 2013

Nee Martha Elizabeth Deal, age 88, originally from Concord, N.C., passed away August 6th at her home in Shaker Heights. Betty was the daughter of the late Nancy and C. Pinckney Deal of Charlotte, N.C. and sister to the late Dr. C.P. Deal Jr. of New York City.

Betty married Edward Beaumont Dudley II who died in 1950. Their children are Edward Beaumont Dudley III (Debbie) of Shaker Heights, OH and William Deal Dudley of Palo Alto, CA.

Betty was also married to the late Harry Martin Newman of Shaker Heights. Their children are Scott Alden Newman of Shaker Heights, Nancy Ann Newman of Montclair, N.J. and the late Martin Deal Newman and James McClure Newman.

Betty is also survived by her four grandchildren: Will Dudley of Portland, OR, Bo Dudley of Shaker Heights, and Eric Hager and Zoe Hager of Montclair, N.J.

Betty was a beloved friend to the late David Laux and his entire family.

Betty attended Coker College in S.C., the Cleveland Institute of Art and received an MA from Case Western Reserve University. She taught art at Roxboro Junior High School in Cleveland Heights where she helped promote light and kinetic sculpture in the public schools. After retirement, she traveled extensively, including leading "The Arts in the Americas" 53 day cruise around North & South Americas.

Betty also worked at 20th Century Fox in California during World War II; was a maitre d' at the "South Seas Plantation" on Captiva Island; was a charter member of the "Art & Flowers" Garden Club; tutored students at Buckeye-Woodland Elementary School and volunteered at the Food Bank. Betty was a former member of the Cleveland Skating Club, and a 60 year active member and volunteer at Plymouth Church in Shaker Heights.

The passions in Betty's life were gardening, reading, cooking and playing bridge. She had an indomitable spirit and was entirely devoted to her family and many friends.

She will be remembered for her wisdom, wit and delightful southern accent.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations sent in Betty's name to a charity of your choice; The Cleveland Botanical Garden Green Corps., 11030 East Blvd., Cleveland, OH 44106; or Plymouth Church, 2860 Coventry Road, Shaker Heights, OH 44120, where a Celebration of Betty's life will be held on Friday, August 23 at 1:00 p.m. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Plymouth Church parlor.
