Bonnie S. Spangler

Bonnie Alice Stormer Spangler passed away peacefully Monday afternoon, February 24, 2025, age 90 at her residence at Judson Park, Cleveland, Ohio. She was surrounded by family - her son, Gregory Brant Spangler of Cleveland, and daughters Rebecca Spangler Barker of Katy, Texas, and Margaret Beth DeFilippis of New York City, and daughter-in-law, Anna Pearl Spangler.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her brother, Willam Stormer, Jr. and sister, Irene Brickner. In addition to her children, Greg, Rebecca, and Margaret (Peg) and daughter in law, Anna, Bonnie is survived by her son-in-law, David Barker and grandchildren Jack Logan Barker, Dana Barker, Gianna DeFilippis, and Michaela DeFilippis, as well as her family of the heart, Lisa, David, and Dominic Grasso.

Bonnie was born on May 28, 1934, in Reynoldsville, Pennsylvania, the daughter of William and Alice Stormer, nee Henery. Growing up, she helped in her father’s grocery store, Stormer’s Market, and played saxophone in his dance band. Bonnie graduated from Reynoldsville-Winslow High School where she sang in the choir, played alto and tenor saxophone in the school band, and was the valedictorian of her class of 1952.

In 1955, Bonnie received her degree as a registered nurse from the Presbyterian-University Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh, where she was student council president. In 1977, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the California University of Pennsylvania, and later, took master’s classes at Widener University in Chester, PA to further her career as a school nurse. She also worked in neo-natal and geriatric care, and served as a volunteer nurse in Würzburg, Germany.

After her long and varied nursing career, she retired in 1996 to Phoenix, Arizona, and Amagansett, New York, to be near the grandchildren she so loved, moving in 2008 to Judson Manor and then Judson Park in Cleveland.

Bonnie was an adventurous traveler, visiting Europe several times, Russia, China, Machu Picchu in Peru, and many places in the U.S. She was also an avid music lover her entire life, playing the piano and singing, and enjoying concerts by the Pittsburgh Symphony, Phoenix Symphony, and Cleveland Orchestra, as well as performances by her son, Greg.

Bonnie’s compassion, optimism, sense of humor, and the love and joy she brought to others will be greatly missed, but she leaves us a wealth of wisdom and memories.

The family prefers that those who wish may make contributions in her name to the following charities:  Alzheimer's Association at alz.org , Judson Foundation at judsonsmartliving.org/foundation/  , Planned Parenthood at plannedparenthood.org .

Arrangements for services (to be held this Spring) are pending.
