CHARLES J. HOOD age 90 of Cleveland Hts., Ohio, passed away June 1st, 2013.
A beautiful life... Charles John Hood was born on November 18, 1922 to James and Mary Hood. He spent his early years living in the old Miles Heights neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio where he was affectionately known as " Charlie Boy". He became an orphan at age 16 after both his parents passed away. He was taken in by the Pickens family and was raised as one of their sons.
He graduated from John Adams High School in 1942. Soon after finishing high school, Charles enlisted in the United States Army where he served his country proudly during World War II.
After returning from the Army, Charles met and married Jonnie Mae Lloyd and to that union Gail Ann Hood was born. Shortly after Gail was born, Charles began working at the General Motors Stamping Plant as a foreman which was formerly located on Coit Road. Charles retired from GM in 1982 after 33 years of faithful service.
Charles, not one to sit around idly, began volunteering at his church where he obtained the supplies for and made bagged lunches for the homeless on a weekly basis. He also served diligently on the church's property committee.
Also during this time, Charles took on the job of crossing guard for the Cleveland Heights University Heights School District. He loved crossing the children and getting to know their families. Charles served as a crossing guard for 17 years and retired in 2005.
After retiring for the second time, Charles developed a passion for cooking. Charles loved cook books and would often fall asleep reading them at night. He also loved watching cooking shows and would often emulate the recipes he saw on t.v. His favorite show was ABC's the Chew. Charles never missed the show and would often record it so he could test out and then tweak the recipes to his liking. One of Charles's favorite things to do was to surprise his family with one of his culinary masterpieces that he learned to prepare after reading his beloved cookbooks or watching one of his favorite cooking shows.
All in all, Charles was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He served his family, church and community faithfully. He touched so many lives and was the reason that many family and friends made something of their lives instead of traveling down the wrong path. He will be missed dearly and the love and life lessons he imparted to all of his family and friends will never be forgotten.
Charles was the beloved husband of the late Jonnie M. (nee Lloyd); dear father of Gail Ann McMichael of Cleveland Hts., OH and Susan Wright of Roanoke, VA; dear grandfather of LaMontica K. and Misty Dawne McMichael and Dawn E. Langford; dear great grandfather of Elijah Respress. Also, lovingly survived by his nephew, Dorne "Tony" Adams and several other cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held in The Disciples of Christ Church, 3663 Mayfield Rd., Cleveland Hts., OH Friday, June 21st at 7 PM.
