Diana Dempsey Treco

Diana “Di” Dempsey Treco of Chagrin Falls, Ohio passed away peacefully on December 8, 2024 at age 96. She became a widow when her husband of 47 years, Frank S. Treco, passed away in 1999. She is survived by two sons, Frank “Skip” and his wife Mary, and James and his wife Sarah. Gordon, her third son, predeceased her. Di enormously enjoyed her 7 grandchildren:  Matthew and Meredith, John, Carlin and Alex, Wynne and Kendall; and her 3 great grandchildren. She prioritized spending time with her family, including planning and sponsoring family trips and travelling regularly to wherever individual families where living including, Indianapolis, San Francisco and London, England. Friends were important to Di as well and she benefited from many close and enduring friendships. Her group of friends had tremendous fun together and earned nicknames over the years. Di’s nickname was “Tiger”. This circle of friends was a tightly-knit group for some 6+ decades.

Di was born and spent most of her life in Cleveland. She grew up in Bratenhal, graduated from Hathaway Brown School and from Hollins College. In addition to being an involved Mom, she was an active member of the community and volunteered for decades at University Hospital, the Garden Club of Cleveland and The Junior League.

She was passionate about sports and made sure she undertook some form of exercise every day. She loved golf and still was pushing her clubs on a cart and walking nine holes until she reached the age of 90. She was a regular on the tennis courts during most her life but hated to lose. She said playing bridge kept her brain active. She was a devoted attendee of the various sporting events in which her sons were involved- spending hours on the sidelines, beside a court (tennis and paddle) or in the stands. Her only complaints were the toll that mud-encased football uniforms took on her washing machine and how food would disappear. Before the introduction of Post It Notes, her sons would find items labeled in the refrigerator “Don’t eat this, it is for dinner”.

Di loved to spend time on and near the water, from the beaches in Wareham, Massachusetts, along the St. Lawrence in Murray Bay, Quebec and- more recently- the warmth of Naples, Florida during the winter months. She will be missed by many but, most of all, by her family. She was a loyal member of the parish at St. Christopher’s by-the-River in Gates Mills.

The family prefers that those who wish may make contributions in her name to Hathaway Brown School, 19600 N. Park Boulevard, Shaker Heights, OH, 44122.
