Edward "Gus" Young

Edward (Gus) Young passed away peacefully on July 7, 2024 at the age of 97. He was born on November 6, 1926, to the late Stanley and Evelyn Young. A lifelong Clevelander, Gus attended Malvern Elementary School in Shaker Heights, University School, and Williams College – joyful days he shared with his only sibling, Jim, who he admired and cherished always. Gus enlisted in the Merchant Marines in World War II at age 17, serving in the Pacific Theater. He was drafted into the Army during the Korean War where he became a lieutenant. He returned home to Shaker Heights and soon started courting Jane Fischer. They married on November 21, 1953, beginning their 69-year love affair. This included over 50 years of warm, sunny winter visits to Sanibel Island, Florida, with friends, family and walking hand in hand down the beach to the Lighthouse. Gus had a successful business career during which he ran four different companies, culminating in KenMac Metals. He had a keen ability to easily assess seemingly complex issues to find clear, simple solutions. Gus brought success to many others along the way. He was a 60+ year member of The Union Club and Kirtland Country Club. Family, above all else, was his greatest joy and the center of his life. Gus was a positive, loyal, generous, caring and kind gentleman with a guiding presence about him. He will be missed by his many friends, business associates, golfing buddies, devoted caregivers and loving family. He is survived by two sons, Stanley A. Young (Gayle), David F. Young (Judy); seven grandchildren, Allison (Cody), Ed (Genvon), Amy, Laura (Connor), Rob, Ellen, and Emma; and one great grandchild, Daniel.

A small memorial gathering will be held for immediate family members. In leu of flowers, the family suggests donations to University School in Hunting Valley, Ohio (www.us.edu/memorialgiving), or the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge (www.dingdarlingsociety.org) or the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (www.sccf.org), both on Sanibel Island, Florida.
