Eleanor Mitchell Lewis passed away peacefully at age 95 on March 13, 2012 in Cleveland, Ohio at Judson Park Retirement Community. Ellie, as she was known, was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her family will always remember her for her love, her sense of humor, and her passions, not to mention her wonderful roast beef dinners with twice-baked potatoes and succotash. Ellie was an excellent landscape and portrait painter in watercolor and acrylic. She loved to knit and needlepoint, frequently reupholstering chairs with her elaborate creations. An avid reader, Ellie visited her local library once a week to get books. Ellie was also an exceptional gardener who specialized in cultivating roses. She and her husband, Wayne H. Lewis, Jr., shared a love for bridge and frequently hosted games. They also loved to travel internationally, visiting Europe several times together. They both enjoyed the ocean and made frequent trips to Florida and the US Virgin Islands. She is survived by her daughter, Marjorie Lewis Moore; her granddaughters Heather Moore and Halley Moore; and her great-grandchildren, Henry, Leo, Oliver, and Coral Frontini and Penelope, Tobias, and Adelaide Drake. Her husband Wayne passed away in 1998. Another grandchild, Wendy Lewis Moore, passed away in 1997. Ellie was born in Chicago in 1917 to George Plummer Mitchell and Florence Andrews Mitchell. Her family moved to Shaker Heights, Ohio in 1933, when Ellie was 16. She graduated from Shaker Heights High School in 1935 and then attended Miami University of Ohio, where she majored in Business. There she met her future husband, Wayne, in an economics class. Ellie graduated from college in 1939 and then moved back to Cleveland and worked as a secretary for a small law firm on Euclid and 9th. She later married Wayne, who was a paint salesman for and eventual co-owner of Parr Paint, Inc. Ellie gave birth to Marjorie Ann Lewis, their only child, in 1941. They lived first on Edison Road in Cleveland Heights and later on Canterbury Lane in Shaker Heights. They belonged to the Mayfield Country Club and the Canterbury Country Club and attended Fairmount Presbyterian Church, where Wayne was an Elder. She worked as a volunteer doing secretarial work for many organizations, such as the American Red Cross, the Florence Crittenton Home for Disadvantaged and Unwed Mothers, and the Fairmount Presbyterian Church Women's Guild, where she also helped to organize educational programs. Ellie also established the Eleanor M. Lewis Fund with the Cleveland Foundation which provides an annual gift to the City of Cleveland for educational purposes, such as college scholarships, career counseling, and Charter School funding. The family prefers that those who wish may make contributions in her name to The Memorial Fund of Fairmount Presbyterian Church, 2725 Fairmount Blvd., Cleveland Heights, Ohio 44118 or Judson Foundation, 2181 Ambleside Dr., Cleveland, Ohio 44106 where Memorial Services will be held in the Auditorium Chapel of Judson Park, 1801 Chestnut Hills Drive, Cleveland Heights, Ohio 44106, on Friday May 4th at 4PM.
