Elizabeth "Betty" Alexander, nee Gubelmann died on January 31, at age 79, from lung cancer. Born in Orland, PA., she grew up in Shaker Hts., OH, attended Bowling Green University and graduated from Flora Stone Mather College. She met Alan R. Alexander in high school and they married in 1952. After marriage, she taught at Caledonia Elementary School in East Cleveland, supporting her husband's four years of medical school at Case Western Reserve. After medical school, Alan's military service took them to the West but once completed, she and Alan returned permanently to Cleveland for her husband's residency and practice of pediatrics. An avid amateur sportswoman, she played tennis and racquetball at the Cleveland Skating Club and enjoyed golf. Her volunteer activities included various PTAs for her children and several terms on the board and the presidency of The Medical Wives' Club at the CWRU School of Medicine. She was a volunteer early in the renaissance of Playhouse Square. She was a long-time board member of the Catherine Horstmann Society, which operated a home dedicated to preparing developmentally disabled women to lead independent lives. Because of her teaching and administrative skills she took a professional position at the Catherine Hostmann home and became the home's long-time Program Director, a position from which she retired in 2007. She is sorely missed by her husband Alan, her daughter Nan Alexander of Cleveland Hts.; her son Robert Joy of Midland, TX.; her son Andrew Anne of Columbus, OH., and her grandchildren Corwin and Sylvia Kates, and Benjamin, Steven, Evan and Ryan Alexander. In lieu of flowers the family suggests gifts to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Northern Ohio Chapter, 4635 Richmond Rd., Cleveland 44128. Services will be private. A public reception to honor her memory will be held at the Cleveland Skating Club on Saturday, Feb. 6 from 2 - 4 pm.
