Elizabeth Betsy Emlen Walker, age 98, a long-time Cleveland Heights resident, died at Judson Retirement Community where she had resided for the last 11 years. She was descended from a long-line of Quakers who settled in New Jersey in 1669, immigrating from England, and eventually settled in Germantown, Philadelphia. There she lived on an estate called "Awbury" with most of her Quaker cousins. Part of that land, donated by relatives, is now "Awbury Arboretum" in Germantown. Betsy moved to Cleveland, Ohio with her husband, L. Gordon Walker, in the 1950's. Betsy was an avid bird-watcher all her life and, with her friend, Jean Eakin, volunteered for the Holden Arboretum's "Bluebird Project", walking for miles in tall grass checking bluebird houses. She also volunteered at the Shaker Lakes Nature Center and was a member of the Village Garden Club. She was a lifelong gardener. She is survived by her 3 children, L. Gordon III from Malvern, PA, Samuel Walker of Omaha, NE, and Elizabeth Boncella of Cleveland Heights, as well as four grandchildren, Page Emlen Walker Buck, L. Gordon Walker IV, Cynthia Emlen Boncella, and Thomas Emlen Walker; and two great-grandchildren, Nina Coddington Buck and Oliver Woolsey Buck. Memorial Services will be held in the Auditorium of Judson Park, Chestnut Hills parking or parking in Ambleside Drive garage on Saturday, June 25 at 3 PM. Contributions in her name can be made to either the Judson Foundation, 2181 Ambleside Drive, Cleveland, Ohio 44106 or to the Awbury Arboretum Association, The Francis Cope House, One Awbury Road, Philadelphia, PA 19138-1505.
