Emma Morris

January 13, 1919 — June 25, 2011

Emma "Jo" Robinson Morris, wife of the late R. Crawford Morris. Mother of the late Cynthia Yarmesch and the late Sylvia Morris, MD. Mother-in-law of Andrew Jay Hotaling, MD of Chicago, IL. Grandmother of Derek Aitken Yarmesch of Great Barrington, MA; James Morris Hotaling, MD of Seattle WA; and Jeffrey Morris Hotaling, MD of Chicago, IL. Jo is also survived by her sister Sylvia Robinson Cruess, MD of Montreal, Canada. Following a stroke in 1993 she was assisted by long time aides, Diana Perry, Jane Perry and until the last several years, Thressi Malone and Agnes Hart. The family thanks them for their years of caring for Jo. Jo attended Laurel School, Hartridge and received a Bachelor's Degree from Vassar College. She completed graduate work in Education at Reserve and Harvard Universities. Her professional experiences included being a Placement Secretary for the Junior League of Cleveland, Library Aide at John Adams High School, Head Teacher at Hannah Nursery School, Secretary to Dr. Arnold Gesell in New Haven, Connecticut, Nursery School Teacher in both Boston and Cleveland and a Campcraft Counselor at Aloha Hive Camp. Jo was involved in numerous community activities. She was President of the Board of Trustees of Children's Services, Trustee and Chairman of the Nominating Committee and Member Extension and Harvard-East Committee of Cleveland Music School Settlement. Jo was Trustee and Chairman of the Resident Relations Committee and a Member of the Search Committee - Christian Residences. She was a Member of the Western Reserve Herb Society and Shaker Lakes Garden Club and the Intown Club. Her past community activities included Trustee of the Rainey Institute, Trustee and Chairman of Volunteers for the Women's Committee of the Cleveland Orchestra, Chairman Junior Activities, Chairman Ladies' Lunch-International Association of Insurance Counsel, Vice President of the Cleveland Vassar Club, President of the Laurel Alumnae Association, Vice President of the Women's Committee of Cleveland Institute of Music, District Chairman, Day Camp Director, Leader and Outdoor Trainer of the Lake Erie Girl Scout Council, President of the Women's Committee for the Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra, Family Life Teacher for the Cleveland Public Schools, and Founding Trustee of the Pepper Pike Civic League. Jo served on the Boards of GCNCA, Cleveland Mental Health, CARAL, Orange School PTA and the Bell Center Clinic. She was Editor of the Lake Erie Girl Scouts MILLWHEEL and Laurel School HIGHLIGHTS. Jo was Campaign Chairman Lightbody for the Orange School Board Commission and was an Elder at the Church of the Covenant. Memorial Services will be held in the Ballroom of Judson Manor, 1890 East 107th Street on Saturday, July 16th at 2 PM.
