Florence Griswold

October 4, 1919 — December 24, 2009

Florence Cavanaugh Griswold, age 90, passed away on Christmas Eve, 2009, the anniversary of her father's birth, at Stratford Commons Nursing Home. She was born on October 4, 1919 in Cleveland, Ohio. She went to Laurel School and attended Wellesley College before graduating from Wheelock College with a teacher's certificate. Flossie went on to get her Master's Degree in Education from Western Reserve University. She was an active member of both St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Cleveland Heights, Ohio and St. John's Episcopal Church in Harbor Springs, Michigan. Florence did volunteer work at St. Luke's Hospital, as well as in Michigan. For more than thirty years, Flossie taught in the Cleveland Heights Elementary Scdhool System. Upon retiring, she spent most of the year in her beloved Harbor Springs, where she had built a cottage. She was predeceased by her brother Bruce Griswold and is survived by her sister-in-law, Sally K. Griswold, niece, Janet de Villeneuve, and three nephews, James B. Griswold, John A. Griswold and Thomas B. Griswold. She is also survived by 11 great nieces and nephews and four greats: a great niece and nephews. The family prefers that those who wish may make contributions in her name to The Cleveland Animal Protective League, 1729 Willey Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44113 or the Harbor Springs Historical Society, PO Box 812 Harbor Springs, MI 49740. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Saturday, January 30 at 11 AM.
