Frank Irving Harding III, known to his friends and family as 'Duke' and to his grandchildren as 'Big Duke' was born on November 4th 1944, in an antique farmhouse just a few miles from the home in Hunting Valley where he died peacefully on June 19th 2014, surrounded by his family.
He caught his first fish - a white bass - at the age of two while rowing along the shores of Lake Erie. He caught his last fish barely a month before his death while in the company of the grandchildren he adored. It was a trout. Throughout his life he boated and fishedfrom the islands of Northern Michigan to the riffles along the Chagrin River. Accompanied by his favorite dog, Blaze, he did a lot of hunting in Ohio's traditional fields and forests.
He graduated from University School and from the University of Michigan. He received his law degree from Case/Western Reserve University andworked for the Cleveland Trust and its successors for many years. Later in his career he was the Managing Director of the Ohio Office of Glenmede Trust. He served on numerous boards and foundations including the board of University School, Hiram College, and Hanna Perkins. Recently he moved back to Hunting Valley where he served as Financial Director of the town- a volunteer position originally held in the 1930's by his father, Frank Harding, Jr.
With a rare combination of realism and empathy, Duke helped people transform their puzzling predicaments into solvable problems. In the end, he wanted to live only as long as he could be a positive force in the affairs of his many friends and clients. That is exactly how long he lived.
Duke married Martha Shierson who survives him. They lived in Cleveland Heights raising two daughters, Elizabeth Gold(Adam) and Katherine Lincoln (Brinton), who survive and seven grandchildren - Sam, James, Jonah & Chase Gold of New York City, and Tegan, Gunner and Briggs Lincoln of Gates Mills. He is also survived by his sister, Ellen Anderson,of Petersham, Massachusetts.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 24th, 3:00pm at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Fairmount Boulevard, Cleveland Heights. Interment will be on a later date at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Norwalk, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donationsto University School, 2785 SOM Center Road, Hunting Valley, 44022, or The Great Lakes Boat Building School, 485 South Meridian Street, Cedarville, Michigan 49719.
