Franklin Bourne Floyd 1919-2009 Franklin Bourne Floyd, the son of the late Preston St. George Floyd and Eleanor Bourne Floyd, died peacefully at his home in Hunting Valley on January 29th, 2009. He attended University School, class of 1938, Choate School and Brown University. Franklin was an outstanding all-around athlete. He still holds the track record at University school for the 100 yard dash, at 9.8, which is the oldest track record at the school. He practiced with fellow track star, Jesse Owens and qualified for the 1940 Olympics which were cancelled due to WWII. He served in the Army Air Corps in the war as a gunnery instructor for B-29 Bombers. After the war, he returned to Cleveland and began his career as a stockbroker for Curtis House and Co until his retirement in the early 1970's. Upon retirement, he followed his passion for the outdoors and became actively involved in wildlife and environmental causes. He was instrumental in resurrecting the Bluebird population in North East Ohio and was known as "the Bluebird Man of Hunting Valley." He received numerous awards for his conservation efforts for Cuyahoga County. Franklin was an avid fisherman off the shores of Cape Cod and the Bahamas. He was an active member of the Winous Point Marsh Conservancy in the Port Clinton, Ohio area. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Elizabeth McLaughlin Floyd, his children, Bourne F. Welsh Donald of New York, NY; Caroline C. Sutphin of Cincinnati, OH, Deborah S. Boiardi Mario of Washington, DC, Franklin Bourne Floyd, Jr. Penny of Shaker Hts., OH and Frederick Preston Floyd Marcia of Gates Mills, OH. He was the dear grandfather of 15 and great grandfather of 8. He was the dear brother of the late John Floyd and Mary King.
