Everyone around Freda West knew that she was one-of-a-kind. She was a powerful example of a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Always positive and upbeat, she was never without an encouraging word.
Born Freda Ross on July 18, 1934 in Lynch, Kentucky, she was the second of eight children of Charles and Irene Ross. Freda was described as a leader who spoke her mind and loved to learn. She earned a bachelor's degree from Kentucky State College in 1955, where she pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Freda met Richard West during her time as an undergraduate student. The couple dated and eventually married in 1957. They welcomed their first and only child, Donna, the following year.
Her career in education began in Texas. From there, she moved to A.G. Bell School in Cleveland, Ohio to continue her gift of teaching the deaf and hard of hearing. She retired in 1992 after serving over three decades in the classroom. This allowed her more time to do the things she loved -- which included reading, swimming, watching tennis, and playing her Game Boy.
On June 27, 2013, Freda passed away at age 78 at The Woodlands of Shaker Heights. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Richard West; her daughter, Donna Stevens; and a grandson, Matt E. Stevens. She also leaves behind her mother, Irene Ross. Her five surviving siblings include Jeanette (Doba) Jackson, Mildred (Curtis) Byrd, Drucella Ross, Charles (Denise) Ross, and Maxine Averitte.
