Frederick Heinlen

August 14, 1915 — March 1, 2011

Fred Heinlen was born August 14, 1915 to Fred and Rose Heinlen of Cleveland. A graduate of Shaw High School in 1934, Fred received his Bachelors Degree in 1938 from Springield College in Springfield, Massachusetts. Following his five year stint as an officer in the Service Air Corps during WWII, Fred went on to obtain a Masters Degree from Columbia University. Having early on decided on a career in coaching, Fred was offered his first coaching job in an upstate New York town of Chittenango where he met his future bride, Lois. Following his graduation from Officers Training School they were subsequently married. After the War, Fred and Lois returned to Cleveland where Fred landed a job he was to have and love for some forty years at Shaker Heights High School as a biology teacher, Athletic Director, and baseball, basketball and JV football coach. In addition to his positions at Shaker Heights High School he became a football official, progressing to the college level and Mid-American Conference. He also served as a linesman official and timekeeper for the Cleveland Browns. For many years he conducted baseball clinics on behalf of the Cleveland Indians organization throughout Northeastern Ohio. He is also a member of the Ohio Officials Hall of Fame. Following his retirement from Shaker, Fred worked at University School for nineteen years where he coached football, basketball and baseball. His lifelong experience as a coach lasted approximately fifty-five years. Fred was the beloved husband of Lois D. nee Dutton of Shaker Hts., OH and the dear father of F. Douglas Heinlen Mary of Sarasota, FL; Rodd R. Heinlen Chris of Isle of Palms, SC and Jan H. Clifford Thomas of Shaker Hts., OH. He was the dear grandfather of Steven, Carson, and Kevin Strang, Emma and Luke Heinlen and the brother of the late Clayton Heinlen. The family prefers that those who wish may make contributions in his name to The Fred Heinlen Fund of the Shaker Schools Foundation, 15600 Parkland Drive, Shaker Hts., OH 44120 or The Hospice of the Western Reserve, 300 E. 185th St., Cleveland, OH 44119. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, March 8th at 4PM in Plymouth Church of Shaker Heights, 2860 Coventry Rd. at Weymouth Rd.. Interment Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman, OH.
