Galen Wood

February 7, 1929 — December 21, 2011

Galen Theodore "Ted" Wood, was born February 7, 1929 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the youngest of Galen Wood and Verna Martha Way's four children. Ted died December 21, 2011, age 82. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Kathryn M. Wood in April, 2011. Ted is survived by his sister Lucretia Evans, brother-in-law Robert Stark, and sister-in-law Gertrude Wood. He is survived by son Stephen A. Wood Eileen, daughter Janet L. Felty James, son Kenneth D. Wood Clara and by eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Ted earned a BS Degree in Chemical Engineering in 1951 and a Ph.D. in Physics in 1956, both from Washington University St Louis. Ted and Kathryn met at Washington University where she received her Masters degree in Physics. He completed his post-doctoral research at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark. He was a Professor of Physics at Cleveland State University for over 40 years and enjoyed teaching acoustics. Ted was an avid musician, playing violin, viola, trumpet, piano, and the harpsichord. Both Ted and Kathryn were members of the Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra for 40 years where Ted played viola and Kathryn played violin. Ted was an active runner, often running several marathons a year into his 80s. He enjoyed planting and eating vegetables from his garden as well as gathering and eating local black walnuts and butternuts. He was a member of the Religious Society of Friends and attended the Cleveland Friends Meeting since 1969. A memorial service will held Saturday May 26, 2012 at 2:30 PM at the Cleveland Friends Meeting, 10916 Magnolia Drive in University Circle. Donations may be made to the Cleveland Friends Meeting, Cleveland State University Physics Department, the Cleveland Philharmonic or the Hospice of the Western Reserve.
