Glenford James was born in Treasure Beach, Jamaica on November 28, 1924 to Cecil and Irene Senior James. He was the eldest son of four daughters and three sons. He came to the United States in 1943 at 19 years of age working on a U.S. Government contract. He moved to Cleveland, Ohio to live and obtained a job working for Fannie Farmer Candies. He also opened "Glen's Garage" that sold gasoline and repaired cars. He was married to Geneva; to this union was born a daughter Anita. Later through a co-worker he met Hazel Robinson in June 1953 and two months later they were married. They were happily married for 56 years. He was very active in his church: East View United Church of Christ. He was Financial Secretary for 10 years; held various other positions at the Church which included the Deacon and Trustee Board and served as an Usher with Hazel. Anything that needed to be fixed or repaired at the Church was taken care of by Brother James without even being asked and anyone even knowing until it was finished. He was a devoted father to his daughters Anita, Caroline and Glenda and later to his granddaughter Acoma. He took great care with his family making sure all vehicles were in excellent condition, repairing, fixing and building "everything." Had a garden that grew big tomatoes, broccoli, onions, garlic and zucchini that you could use as a "lethal weapon." Everybody loved getting vegetables from Mr. James. He also enjoyed giving his son-in-laws, Patrick and Rennie a "hard-time". He was affectionately known as "Pops" to Rev. Dr. Valentino Lassiter and his family. He was preceded in death by his wife Hazel and brother Robert. He leaves his daughters Anita, Caroline Renoir and Glenda Patrick; grandson Lonnie Jr., and granddaughter Acoma; sisters Cynthia, Florence, Vivia, MorTica; brother Cecil and a host of other family and friends to cherish his memory. A Homecoming Celebration for Glenford James will be held Tuesday, April 17th at 11 AM in East View United Church of Christ, 15615 Chagrin Blvd., Cleveland, OH, WHERE FRIENDS MAY CALL ONE HOUR PRIOR TO THE SERVICE.
