Glorain Curry Browne, age 71, died at home in Lyndhurst, Ohio on Friday April 3, 2009. Glorain Browne was a native of New Orleans, LA, daughter of the late Glorain Stoddard Curry and René Andrew Curry, Sr. She attended Fortier High School and Louise S. McGehee School. She graduated from Sophie Newcomb College, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Glorain later taught high school English at her alma mater Fortier. Glorain lived all over the United States and in Stuttgart, Germany. She spent many years in Salt Lake City, UT, and Rosemont, PA, before settling in Shaker Heights, OH in 1985. She moved to Lyndhurst in 2004. Glorain maintained an abiding devotion to New Orleans and her Southern roots, even as she embraced Cleveland as her adopted home. Glorain was an enthusiastic supporter of Sophie Newcomb College and Tulane University throughout her life, and was active in the Alumnae Chapters of Kappa Alpha Theta in Salt Lake City, Philadelphia, and Cleveland. She was a past President and Social Chair of the Southern Alliance of Cleveland. She also edited the Alliance's 10th Anniversary Cookbook released in 1998. She was an accomplished gourmet cook and a consummate hostess. There were few things Glorain enjoyed more than entertaining, especially sharing authentic New Orleans cuisine with her friends and neighbors north of the Mason-Dixon line. Glorain was an active member of the Village Garden Club of Cleveland and kept a lush, colorful garden wherever she lived. Making and keeping up friendships came easily to Glorain. She was a dedicated correspondent. Once introduced to e-mail, she used it enthusiastically to keep in touch with family and friends. She enjoyed both devotional and social activities as an active member of the Fairmount Presbyterian Church. She loved taking newcomers to Cleveland under her wing and introducing them to its neighborhoods, restaurants, and landmarks, as well as to her immense network of friends. Glorain was a faithful reader of both the Cleveland Plain Dealer and the New Orleans Times-Picayune. A beloved mother of two, Glorain is survived by her daughter, René Elizabeth Browne of Alexandria, VA, and her son, Earl Zollicoffer Browne III of Seattle, WA. She was a dear sister of René Andrew Curry, Jr. of New Orleans, LA, and Linda Peterson of Keller, TX. She is also survived by her son-in-law, William J. Cahir; her daughter-in-law, Jyana S. Browne; her sister-in-law, Sissy Claverie Curry; her brother-in-law, Charles H. Peterson, and many nieces and nephews.
