November 25, 1916 — September 2, 2013

Gretchen Hickok, a philanthropist whose family included a panoply of prominent Clevelanders, died peacefully September 2 at Judson Park. She was 96.

A longtime supporter of the arts, education, and various social causes, Mrs. Hickok also frequently volunteered her time at various University Circle institutions, including Cleveland Institute of Music, Cleveland Institute of Art, and at Severance Hall.

She was the great granddaughter of pioneering industrialist Philip Minch, and granddaughter of Henry and Sofia Steinbrenner. Painters Arthur and William Schneider and architect Charles Schneider were her uncles. Her cousins included George M. Steinbrenner III, and architect George F. Schneider.

Gretchen Schneider Hickok was born November 25, 1916, in Cleveland. She was the daughter of Herbert L. and Jessie Steinbrenner Schneider. She graduated from Laurel School and, afterward, Wells College. After World War II, she was married to real estate investor Ralph Hirsh until his death. Later on, she married industrialist Robert D. Hickok, who died in 1992. She had no children of her own, but remained devoted to the children of her extended family.

Mrs. Hickok will be buried in Lake View Cemetery. Per her request, the interment will be held privately.
