Gretchen W. Mellin passed away peacefully on September 30, 2015 after a long illness, just shy of her 79th birthday. The oldest of three girls, she was born and raised in Wyandotte, Michigan to J. Ralph and Isabel (Betty) Wagner on October 17, 1936. She attended Theodore Roosevelt High School where she met her sweetheart and future husband, Cecil R. Mellin. A recent resident of Judson Park in Cleveland, she lived most of her life in Shaker Heights, Ohio where she and Cecil, her husband of 57 years, raised their family.
Gretchen was salutatorian of the Theodore Roosevelt High School class of 1954, was first in the University of Michigan Business School class of 1958, then got a job and put her husband through University of Michigan Law School. She loved her family and loved to travel. She collected antiques, particularly "primitive" wood furniture and unique silver serving pieces, and loved searching for her next treasure in the rural antique shops that she and Cecil sought out. She developed a keen admiration for antique quilts and a passion for making quilts by hand herself.
In addition to Cecil, she is survived by her daughter Susan (Sue) and grandchild Jamie; her son William (Bill), daughter-in-law Stephanie, and grandchildren Hillary, Ian, and Kevin; her son James (Jim), daughter-in-law Kris, and grandchildren Ben, Henry, Charlie, and Eleanor; her sister and brother-in-law Jan and David Smith; her brother-in-law Fred Roos, husband of her late sister Kathryn.
The family prefers that those who wish make contributions in her name to Plymouth Church of Shaker Heights, 2860 Coventry Rd., Shaker Hts., OH 44120 where Funeral Services will be held on Friday, October 9th at 2:00 PM.
