H. Fabens

January 12, 1924 — December 5, 2010

Bruce Fabens, 86, yachtsman and businessman; died at Judson Park retirement home after a long illness. For many years he was a part of the Lamson & Sessions Company, serving as their chief financial office during the late 1960's. He later worked with his brother Lawrie Fabens at the Truline Bearing Company. Mr. Fabens was born and reared in Wooster, OH. After graduating from University School in 1941 he followed his father and brother, in a family tradition, to MIT, graduating in 1944. During World War II he attended Officers Training School and served in the Pacific as an Ensign on the destroyer St. Louis. After the war, Mr. Fabens continued his education earning a Masters Degree from Harvard Business School. The descendent of a Salem clipper ship family, Mr. Fabens felt a deep love for the water and lived the later part of his life overlooking Lake Erie at the Mentor Harbor Yachting Club. He and his wife Ann cruised extensively around the Great Lakes on their sailboats and then on their New England lobster boat. For many years they were both avid skiers. In addition to the Yachting Club, Mr. Fabens enjoyed membership in the Union Club and Mayfield Country Club. An active member of St Paul's Episcopal Church, he served in many capacities: as Junior Warden, Sunday School Superintendent, and Chairman of their annual campaigns. He also served as Chairman of the Association of Children with Learning Disabilities. His love for MIT was carried out through screening prospective students for the Institute. When attending MIT meetings in later years, it was a great satisfaction to see those students as successful businessman. Mr. Fabens is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ann Caldwell Fabens. Also surviving are his sons, Bruce Fabens of Ithaca, NY and Frank Fabens of Seattle, WA and their wives Diana Levy and Gloria Albetta. His daughters are Elizabeth Fabens, MD of Philadelphia, PA and Rachel Waldorf of Cleveland Heights, OH and her husband Steven Waldorf. An enjoyable part of Mr. Fabens' life was his extended family including his nine grandchildren: Sam and Eli Fabens; Isabella and Gabriel Fabens, Ann, Ben and Laura Fabens-Lassen; and Hannah and Alison Waldorf. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Care of the Western Reserve, 300 E 185th St Cleveland, OH 44119 or to St Paul's Episcopal Church 2747 Fairmount Blvd, Cleveland Hts, OH 44106 where a Memorial Service will be held on Friday, December 17th at 4:00pm, with a reception to follow.
