Harold Dicke

April 22, 1929 — September 21, 2013

On Saturday, September 21st, the Reverend Harold F. Dicke (Hal) of Cleveland Heights, OH entered into eternal rest.

Born in Brazil on April 22, 1929, he was the son of the late Rev. Edward and Edith Dicke. After completing Concordia College, St. Paul, MN he attended Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, MO and was ordained in 1954. Pastor Dicke had a wide variety of ministries and assignments over his 40 plus years of liturgical service. He served as Assistant Pastor at Layton Park Church in Milwaukee, WI; Chaplain of the Milwaukee Fire Dept; and Chairman of the Editorial Committee of Badger Lutheran Newspaper. After two years, at the age of 27, Rev. Dicke became pastor for this congregation. He later went on to lead Grace Lutheran Church in Glen Ellyn, IL for 13 years where he also chaired the Clergy Council and served as Chairman of the Public Relations Dept. of the English District of the Missouri Synod. From there, he accepted a call to Grace Lutheran Church in Cleveland Heights, OH and served for 25 years. While in Cleveland, Pastor Dicke was the Chairman of the Lutheran Metropolitan Ministries. Pastor Dicke retired from administrative duties in 1994 but continued to exercise his liturgical ministry in various capacities throughout the community which included serving as interim pastor to Bethel Lutheran Church in Middleburg Heights, OH .

Hal enjoyed telling jokes and stories and will always be remembered for his booming laugh. He was an American History and Civil War buff, visiting many battlefields. He had a passion for ice cream, Dairy Queen, Whoppers, gadgets, pens, trivia, playing games with his family, N Series trains, and elephants.

He was the beloved husband for 62 years of Ellen (nee Visser) of Cleveland Heights, OH. Dear father of Jennifer Fisher (John) of Newnan, GA; Rebecca Lutz (Craig) of Valparaiso, IN; Sara Dougherty (Thomas) of Mt. Lebanon, PA; Matthew Dicke of Cleveland Hts., OH and Andrew Dicke of Clifton Park, NY. Dear grandfather of Sophie Lutz and Daniel, William and Claire Dougherty. Dear brother of Margaret Weerts (Edward) and Elinor Burce (Willard), both of Eau Claire, WI, and Edward Dicke (Phyllis) of Oakdale, MN. And beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by all.

Visitation will take place Wednesday, September 25, 2013 from 5pm until 7pm. Those who wish may make a contribution in Pastor Dicke's memory to Lutheran Metropolitan Ministries, c/o The Richard Sering Center, 4515 Superior Ave., Cleveland, OH, 44103 or Grace Lutheran Church, 13001 Cedar Road, Cleveland Hts., OH 44118, where Funeral Services will be held, Thursday, September 26th at 10:30 am. Internment will take place at a later date in Long Prairie, MN.
