Harry Bolwell

May 17, 1925 — September 3, 2012

Harry James Bolwell grew up in Kearny, New Jersey. He was a decorated war veteran in World War II serving for the United States Army Air Corps in Italy. Harry attended the University of Vermont and graduated in 1949. He went on to work as a Nuclear Engineer and became General Manager of Combustion Engineering, Chattanooga plant, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 1961 he joined Midland Ross Corporation, initially in Toledo, Ohio and later in Cleveland, Ohio and he became Chairman and Chief Executive Officer from 1970-1986. During that time he also became Chairman of the Board of Trustees of University Hospitals of Cleveland. In 1986 the Bolwell Building for Ambulatory Care at University Hospitals was dedicated to Harry Bolwell. He continued to have an interest in healthcare and in 1991 became Chief Executive Officer of New York Columbian Presbyterian Hospital. In the last decade he has served as Chairman of the Indian River Hospital district of Vero Beach, Florida. He was an Emeritus Board of Trustee member of Case Western Reserve University and the University of Vermont. Harry was the beloved husband of Betty Weber Bolwell nee McLachlan of Vero Beach, FL and the late Suzanne R. Bolwell nee Poljacik, and the dear father of Brian J. Bolwell, MD Nina of Novelty, OH and Suzanne C. Barbar of Belmont, MA. Harry was the stepfather of Glenn, Lee, John and Tex Weber and the grandfather of six. The family prefers that those who wish may make contributions in his name to The Taussig Cancer Institute of The Cleveland Clinic, 9500 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, OH 44195. Memorial Services will be held Friday, September 7th at 4 PM in St. Hubert's Episcopal Church, 88970 Baldwin Rd., Kirtland Hills, OH 44060. A family Interment service was held in Lake View Cemetery.
