Helena McDaniel

January 18, 1923 — July 30, 2012

Helena Nina Prescott McDaniel, a resident of Waite Hill for 22 years, died July 30 after bravely and gracefully facing Alzheimer's disease. She was predeceased by her husband, Augustus C. Gus McDaniel, with whom she shared her life for 58 years. Nina was born at home in Passaic, New Jersey, on January 18, 1923, to Amos Neal Prescott and Marion Drukker Prescott and was graduated from Pine Manor College in 1942, after which she married Lt. Daniel C. Marshall. She was widowed in 1944, when Lt. Marshall was shot down over the Pacific. Nina had two younger brothers, Amos N. and Edward D. deceased. Gus and Nina raised three daughters, Marny Kaufman Craig, Quechee, VT, Merry McCreary Rob, Hunting Valley, OH, and Nina Bolwell Brian, Novelty, OH. Nina was deeply involved in the Cleveland community - volunteering for more than twenty years at University Hospitals including presiding over its Friends organization, actively participating in the Shaker Lakes Garden Club, and serving on the board of the Recreation League of Cleveland. She strongly supported Gus's leadership in the machine tool industry, accompanying him on business trips to 16 countries around the world, from Asia to Europe to South America. Gus and Nina spent summers in Christmas Cove, Maine where Nina's family's roots go back for generations. She appreciated the beauty found in nature, especially along the coast. At a young age, she became an accomplished sailor and enjoyed boating throughout her life. A loving mother to her three daughters, Nina was blessed with six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The family prefers that those who wish may make contributions in her name to St. Hubert's Episcopal Church, 8870 Baldwin Rd., Kirtland Hills, OH 44060, where Memorial Services will be held, Monday AUGUST 13TH at 4 PM.
