Helmut Alpers

July 10, 1930 — August 18, 2017

Helmut A. Alpers, age 87 of Orange Village, OH, peacefully passed away on August 18, 2017 following a lengthy illness. Beloved husband of Marcia A. Alpers (nee Nord); Dear father of Stuart N., Scott C., Erica S. Allen (James R.); grandfather of Sydney N. and Quinn L. Alpers and Grant A. Allen; brother of Hugo A. Alpers and the late Frederick W. Alpers.

He was a graduate of Shaker Heights High School, Case Institute of Technology and Harvard Business School. Following two years in the U.S. Army in Germany assigning troops around the world, he spent eighteen years with IBM including time as an assistant to Chairman Thomas J. Watson and later managing the headquarters' Competitive Analysis Department. After leaving IBM, he returned to Cleveland to oversee the family business, General Bookbinding. Subsequent positions included that of EVP of Gartner Group, an IT advisory firm, and owned an entrepreneurial ice cream equipment company- Flurry International, creator of the McDonald's McFlurry.

The family prefers that those who wish may make contributions in his name to Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (themmrf.org), Holly Hill Nursing Home (hollyhillhealthcare.com) or to the St. Christopher's Fund of St. Christopher's by-the-river, 7601 Old Mill Rd., Gates Mills, OH, 44040, where a Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 2nd at 2pm. Private family interment, Gates Mills South Cemetery.
