Dr. Henry Bohlman graduated from University of Maryland Medical School in 1964 following an internship in Medicine Pediatrics at University Hospital in Baltimore and a year of General Surgerey. He then carried out his orthopaedic training at John's Hopkins Hospital and a in the middle of his residency carried out an NIH sponsored fellowship for the Pathology of Fatal Craniospinal Injuries. Following a two-year tour in the Air Force he came to University Hospitals in Cleveland and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine as an Instructor in Orthopaedic surgery. Dr. Bohlman then spent 27 years as Chief of the Acute Spinal Cord Injury UInit at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center and is currently Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Director of the University Hospitals Spine Institute. Among the awards and honors is that Dr. Bohlman was President of the Cervical Spine Research Society from 1988-1989, President of the Federation of Spine Associations in 1994 and has been the Civilian National Consultant to the United States Air Force Surgeon General's Office for spine surgery. In 2006, he was inducted in the John Hopkins Society of Scholars for Distinguished Contributions in the Field of Scholarship and received the Leon Wiltse Aware from the North American Spine Society for contributing greatly to the art and science of spinal-disorder management through service to NASS. In 2008, he received the Nicolas Andry Award for Lifetime of Achievements in Spine Surgery. Recently a Professorship has been established in Dr. Bohlman's name at University Hospital in which $2.3 million endowment has been established. He is consulting Editor for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and the Journal Spine. He has published 121 articles in peer review journals, 45 book chapters, and has presented 445 lectures as Visiting Professor or instructional course lecturer and paper presentations around the United States and various countries around the world. Dr. Bohlman directs the Spine Fellowship Program at the University Hospitals Case Medical Center and has helped train 81 domestic fellows, who go on to predominately full-time academic positions in this country and has trained 35 foreign fellows for other Universities around the world. On September 1, 2010, at the Samuel Mather dinner, Dr. Bohlman will be awarded The University Hospitals Distinguished Physician Award. This award is University Hospital's highest achievement for lifetime service.
