Hugh Tobin

Hugh Tobin, beloved husband of Judith S. Tobin nee Sweeney. Dear father of Matthew Elizabeth, Houston, TX, Timothy Mary, Portland, OR, Jane Tobin David Moore, San Francisco, CA Hugh T. Tobin Judy, Cleveland Heights, OH and Ann Tobin Pakula David Pakula, Yardley, PA. Hugh is also survived by nine grandchildren. Dear brother of Philip Tobin Joan, Hudson, OH and the late three brothers: Thomas H. Tobin, Joseph Tobin, S. J., and James Tobin. Hugh was born in 1926 in Teaneck, NJ, one of five boys born to Mary McKenna and Thomas J. Tobin. The family moved to Cleveland in 1930, and took up residence Cleveland Heights. Hugh, like his brothers, attended St. Ann's Catholic School and St. Ignatius High School, from which Hugh graduated in 1944. He joined the US Navy in 1944 and served in World War II on the USS Rockingham, which was deployed in the Pacific theatre in the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, and supported the first troop occupation of Japan. After returning from the service, Hugh attended the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and graduated in 1949 with a BS in Economics. He moved back to Cleveland and joined the Treasury Department at Republic Steel Corporation. He was later transferred to the company's Transportation Department, ultimately assuming the position of General Manager of Transportation, and President of the company's railroads. During his career in Transportation, Hugh served as an Officer and/or Director of the National Industrial Transportation League, the Transportation Association of America, The National Freight Transportation Association, the National Defense Transportation Association, and the National Waterways Conference. In 1982 he served for one term as Chairman of the Transportation Committee of the American Iron and Steel Institute, and in 1984, was selected by then U. S. Secretary of Transportation Elizabeth Dole to be a member of the National Defense Executive Reserve. After his retirement from Republic in 1984, Hugh acted as a consultant, specializing in the development of accounting systems for small non-profit entities. He also served on the Boards and/or executive committees of several Catholic Churches and hospitals, including Walsh Jesuit High School Stow, OH and St. Mary's Catholic Church Hudson, OH. Hugh was a member at Shaker Heights Country Club for a number of years - he and Judy were avid golfers. The family prefers that those who wish may make contributions in his name to Walsh Jesuit High School Tuition Assistance Program, 4550 Wyoga Lake Road, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio 44224-1059, or Communion of Saints Catholic School formerly St. Ann's Catholic School 2175 Coventry Road, Cleveland Hts., OH 44118. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Mary Church, 340 North Main St., Hudson, OH 44236, on Friday April 27 at 11 AM. THE FAMILY WILL BE RECEIVING FRIENDS ONE HALF HOUR PRIOR TO THE SERVICE.
