Irene Chalko (nee Wicinski), 97, passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 1, 2023.
Beloved wife of 52 years to the late Paul, mother of Christopher (Eleanor Smith) and Paula Rownd (Jim). Grandmother of Matthew (Shannon Trimble), William (Hannah Moore) and Maureen Chalko; Scott (Krista Hollingsworth) and Kathryn Rownd. Great grandmother to Margaret Chalko and Emily Rownd.
She is survived by her brothers Arthur and Clement Wicinski, preceded in death by her siblings Mary Choromanski, Sophie Sarnowski, John, Martin, Br. Roman, S.M. and Carl.
Irene was a graduate of South High School and Ursuline College. She was devoted to her family, especially her grandchildren. Meeting her great-granddaughters was a source of great delight. Irene never liked being the center of attention and let her actions speak for her. She was a tireless volunteer for decades in many organizations: as a PTA room mother at Fernway School, a Girl Scout Troop Leader, and as a member of the St. Dominic Women’s Guild, the Dominican Chorale, and the Christ Child Society. She was an active member of the Christ Child Society for over 50 years and received the Mary Virginia Merrick award in 1992 for exemplifying the spirit, values, and service of the foundress of the Christ Child Society.
The family would like to thank the staff of Crossroads Hospice and Rose Senior Living for their help and care for Irene.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to The Project Serve Ministry of The Church of St. Dominic, 3450 Norwood Road, Shaker Heights, OH 44122 or Christ Child Society of Cleveland, 7901 Detroit Ave., Suite 300, Cleveland, OH 44102.
