James Dalton

March 19, 1918 — June 22, 2013

James A. Dalton, age 95. Beloved husband of the late Janet Benson Dalton. Dear father of Sharon D. Sanders (James) of Marietta, GA, Linda B. Patterson (John) of Cleveland Heights, OH and Beverly Dalton of Brunswick,ME. James was the dear grandfather of 11 and great-grandfather of 12. Jim Dalton and his partner Byron founded Dalton Dalton Architects in 1941. After WWII, in 1946, he was joined by his brother and the firm became Dalton-Dalton-Architects-Engineers. Jim graduated from Shaker Heights High School in 1936. He swam on the 200 yard relay team that won the state championship in 1935. He graduated from the College of Architecture at Western Reserve University in 1941. While in school he was a member of the swimming team and belonged to the social fraternity Alpha Delta Phi. Jim enlisted in the Air Force in 1942 and served until 1946. He was a 1st Lieutenant in the 9th Air Force stationed in the U.S., England, France, Luxemburg, Belgium and Germany. He received the Bronze Star medal and Four Battle stars on his European African Middle East ribbon.


Jim was a senior partner in his firm for over 30 years and was partner in charge of many buildings in Cleveland and other parts of the country. He was responsible in Cleveland for the Classroom and Lecture Hall Building of C.S.U, the Glidden Research Center, The Ohio Bell Computer Center and Master Builders Headquarters Building. In Nigeria, Africa he designed two schools in Aba and Lagos. Jim designed the Lecture Hall and Classroom Building at F.I.U. in Miami, Florida.


Jim enjoyed fishing and boating at the family island in Georgian Bay, Ontario, Canada. He was a past member of The Cleveland Athletic Club, Shaker Heights Country Club and Ocean Reef Club. Jim served on the board of The Cleveland Health Foundation, Salvation Army, Architectural Board of Western Reserve University, Who's Who of America and member of Fairmount Presbyterian Church. Jim was a registered architect in the state of Ohio and 16 other states. He was a member of the NCARB, The National Council of Architects Registration Board, AIA, American Institute of Architects and ASO, Architectural Society of Ohio.
