JAMES H. DEMPSEY Jr. died at his residence in Hunting Valley. He graduated from University School, Yale College and its Law School. He joined the Navy and was on active service before Pearl Harbor. During his service, he qualified both as a deck officer and a naval aviator and attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Dempsey was the last of five members of his family who were partners of the firm of Squire, Sanders, & Dempsey, founded by his father, from its beginning in 1890 until his retirement in 2001. He was a resident of Hunting Valley since the Fall of 1945. Dempsey served two terms as clerk of the village and three terms as mayor. He was President and Trustee of The Cleveland Museum of Art and the Lakeview Cemetery Association. He was also a trustee of the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio, the Home for Aged Women, Laurel School, University Hospitals, and several foundations. He also served as a director of the Maynard H. Murch Company, The Rotor Tool Company, and the W.S. Tyler Company. His hobbies were golf and tennis. Dempsey is survived by his wife, Julia, two daughters, Julia Cox of Brookline, Massachusetts and Melissa Gerrity of Weston, Massachusetts and two grandchildren.
