Jay Hoffer Sload

November 6, 1936 — November 11, 2023

Shaker Heights

Jay Hoffer Sload of Shaker Heights, Ohio passed away on November 11, 2023. He was a son of Paul Hoffer Sload and Katharine Harrington Sload, born on November 6th, 1936 in Shaker Heights, where he lived 80 of his 87 years. Jay graduated from Shaker Heights High School in 1954 and from Denison University in 1958. At Denison, Jay majored in math, played basketball and was a proud member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. After graduation, he spent two years stationed in France with the United States Army.  He began his investment career as a bond salesman at McDonald & Company Securities in 1960. Jay married the love of his life, Beverly Fuller, in 1962 and they raised three boys.  Never idle, Jay worked for McDonald & Company (now UBS Financial Services) for the rest of his life, most recently as Senior Vice President in the Personal Wealth Management Group. When he wasn’t working, Jay and Bev traveled regularly, including embarking on numerous bike trips across the United States and abroad with groups of Cleveland friends.

Jay will be remembered for his honesty, loyalty, kindness, and love of family.  He lived his life with enthusiasm, vibrancy, and humor, with a repertoire of thousands of jokes, some more PG-rated than others, which he delivered deftly. He was a long-time member of The Country Club in Pepper Pike where he was an avid golfer. Jay loved going to the movies and enjoyed playing cards with friends. He was adored by his nine grandchildren, who, worried about what he would do if he ever retired, came up with the following suggestions: online poker player, sports bookie, antique car collector, or short-order cook.

Jay is survived by: his wife of 61 years, Beverly Sload; his three sons and their families, Michael Sload (Tammy) of Darien, CT; David Sload (Carla) of Ratoath, Ireland; Peter Sload (Patti) of Evanston, IL; his sister, Judy May of  Mount Hood, OR; and his grandchildren, Jeffrey, Amanda, Evelyn, Genevieve, Evan, Hannah, Kate, Jack, and Charlie Sload.  He was predeceased by his brother Jack Harrington Sload.

Friends and family are invited to dress in bright colors and celebrate Jay’s life on Saturday, November 18th from 3:00pm – 6:00pm at The Country Club, 2825 Lander Road, Pepper Pike.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Jay’s name to Friends of Breakthrough Schools, 3615 Superior Avenue, Bldg 44, Suite 4403D, Cleveland, OH 44114.  www.breakthroughschools.org/donate
