Jean Z. Piety (nee Zerckel), beloved wife of John S. Piety, dear cousin of James H. Brown and Karen Sommer.



Jean was manager of the Science and Technology Department at the Cleveland Public Library from 1980-2008, head of CPL Special Services (including FACTS FOR A FEE & Photoduplication Office) from 1976-1980, head of CPL Environmental Resources Center from 1973-1976, and librarian at CPL Science and Technology Department from 1957-1972.



Jean was a Special Libraries Association (SLA) member from 1958 to 2015. During that time she held SLA offices which included Deputy Chair in 1980; Standards Committee in 1993; SLA Division Science-Technology Treasurer, Bylaws Committee Chair, and Standards Committee Liaison; SLA Cleveland Chapter President from 1978-1979; American Library Association life member; member of Association for Information Science and Technology, Ohio Academy of Science, Ohio Library Council; and archivist for Cleveland Technical Societies Council (CTSC).



Jean was a member of numerous other organizations which included: Cleveland Botanical Garden, Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Friends of the Greenhouse, Cleveland Zoological Society, Akron Art Museum, Holden Arboretum, Lake Farm Park, Western Reserve Historical Society, Playhouse Square Foundation, National Trust for Historical Preservation, Cleveland Restoration Society, Shakespeare Society of Great Lakes Theater, International Women's Air and Space Museum, Ohio Historical Society, Great Lakes Science Center, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Friends of Heights Libraries, Friends of the Cleveland Public Library, Friends of the Smithsonian, The Musical Theater Project, and more.



Jean had the following publications: co-authored Chapter 1, "General Engineering" in Using the Engineering Literature, edited by Bonnie Osif, Routledge, 2006; articles in Science & Technology Libraries, RQ, Isotopics, Library Hi-Tech News, and Sci-Tech News; "The Environmental Resources Collection," in Special Delivery: A Collection of Papers, 1978; and paper and poster session at SLA Annual Conference in 1976.



Jean presented at the following: "Historical/Obsolete Standards," at the 2004 SLA Annual Conference session; 1995 SLA-Cleveland Chapter Betty Burrows Memorial Seminar facilitator; IHS meeting 1992; Alberta L. Brown Lecture series (Western Michigan University); LACUNY Institute in 1979; Continuing Education Seminars; guest lecturer at Kent State University Special Libraries class; and acted as the librarian in "A Whole New World," Edward Feil Production.



Jean received SLA Engineering Division Elsevier Award in 2008 and the CTSC Visionary Award in 2002.



Jean's current interests included: Non-Affiliated Community IACUC member at CASE & VA until 2013; CTSC Board of Governors archivist until 2013; reading; sewing; attending theater, musical events, and Cleveland Orchestra concerts, her husband; two cats; and retirement.
