JEANNE S. CLOUGH: DEDICATED CLEVELANDER JEANNE S. CLOUGH nee Schlitt Age 84, passed away on December 7, 2008. A lifelong Clevelander, devoted mother, friend and community citizen, Jeanne exemplified a life of commitment to her family and our city. Jeanne was born in Cleveland on November 20, 1924, to Herbert L. and Margaret Couse Schlitt, also lifelong Clevelanders. She grew up in Cleveland Hts., with her brother, Howard. Her grandfather, Howard A. Couse, was born in a log cabin in rural Pennsylvania. After graduating from Yale University, he became chief counsel for General Electric and wrote the Ohio Form Books for corporate law which are still used today. Howard and his wife, Emma nee Neyhart established the family in Cleveland at University Circle. Jeanne was a graduate of Laurel School, Bennett Jr. College and Ohio University with a degree in teaching. She taught both in the Maple Heights district and at Laurel School. Always active and involved, during WWII, Jeanne served as a Red Cross nurse's aide at University Hospital. After that, she became one of the first students to go abroad Sweden with the Experiment in International Living. She promoted this program of cultural exchange as a host family and then with her children. A lover of animals, particularly horses, as well as the outdoors, she was a riding instructor at Red Raider Camp and went to Montana in the summers to work at a dude ranch and train horses. Having four children kept her on the go while she maintained her volunteer activities. In later life, she continued to be active through walking, aqua-aerobics and traveling both with her family and friends. Throughout her life, Jeanne was a devoted mother to her four children: Heather Richey Thalman James of Bainbridge, OH; deWayne G. "Woody" Richey, III, of St. Petersburg, FL; Douglas Martin Richey Margaret "Peggy" of Cleveland Hts., OH, and Margaret "Meg" Richey Nelson Thomas of Chagrin Falls, OH. She was also a loving grandmother to Jamie Thalman, David Nelson and Katherine "Kalle" Nelson, who were a constant source of pride, fun and more action for her. She was fortunate to have a second marriage to John M. Clough, M.D., and to add to her family his four grown children and eight grandchildren. Committed to Cleveland, she was an active volunteer, serving on the Boards of the Women's Auxiliary Council of the Western Reserve Historical Society, the Moses Cleveland Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Arcadian Garden Club and the Society for Crippled Children, Homecrafter's Shop and The Sassy Cat. Jeanne also enjoyed working with friends at the Trellis Shop at the Garden Center. She was a member of Fairmount Presbyterian Church for 47 years and a former member of Calvary Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Cleveland Skating Club for 44 years, Intown Club and Dunham Tavern Museum. After raising her family, she enjoyed the company of friends in many activities, including volunteer efforts, church, theater, the arts and educational events. Her life was characterized by a steadfast dedication to Cleveland community organizations, as well as her devotion to her family, her friends and her faith.
