Joan Myers Schattinger

Joan Myers Schattinger, 88, passed away on March 6th, 2025 surrounded by family after a years-long fight with Parkinson’s. She was the daughter of Walter Myers and Janet Shelhart Myers.

Joan is survived by her much loved husband/partner-in-everything of 63 years, James Schattinger and by her children; Lisa Schattinger Buchan, (Alistair), and James Douglas Schattinger, (Lisa). She is also survived by her adored grandchildren: Haley Buchan, Henry Buchan, and Benjamin Schattinger.

Joan was a graduate of Wellesley College with a degree in political science. After Wellesley, she worked at Harvard Law School on tax cases relating to the country of Columbia. Subsequently, Joan earned a Masters in American Studies from Case Western Reserve University. She went on to teach at Orange High School starting the honors English program. After moving to Cambridge, MA, she taught English at Brookline High School while Jim earned his MBA. Joan returned to Cleveland where she was an active community volunteer with organizations that focused on women, children and education. She co-founded History Associates and co-wrote a series of books about the history of Cleveland’s Flats. Joan loved the arts, particularly the Cleveland Art Museum and the Cleveland Orchestra. She had a life-long passion for civic engagement, global affairs, and history.

Joan will be greatly missed by her family and her many friends. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers that those who wish may make contributions in honor of Sister Rose to The Urban Community School, 4909 Lorain Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44102.

A memorial service will be held on April 13, 2025 at 1pm at the Reinberger Chamber Hall at Severance Music Center, 11001 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, OH 44106, followed by a gathering to celebrate life at The Cleveland Skating Club, 2500 Kemper Rd., Shaker Hts., OH 44120,  at 2:30 pm,  where the family will greet friends.
