Joan Scott

Joan D. Scott nee Dunakin, age 79, passed away December 17, 2008. Beloved wife of the late John T. Scott, Jr; loving mother of John T. Scott, III Maureen of Potomac, MD, Julie Scott Lovell Christopher of Sherborn, MA, Katherine Scott of Chagrin Falls, OH, and Amy Scott Gilchrist Thomas of Cleveland Hts., OH; devoted grandmother of Jennifer Scott, Kristen Scott, Andrew Scott, John Lovell, Samantha Lovell, Amanda Lovell, Martha Gilchrist, Grant Gilchrist, Anne Scott, Madeleine Scott and Duncan Scott; dear sister of Darrell Dunakin Grand Rapids, MI and Janet O'Farrell of Niskayuna, NY. Born in Grand Rapids, MI, Joan graduated from Smith College '51. Joan practiced her love of English and writing by working in the Laurel School library, reading stories at her grandchildren's preschool, regularly writing letters to the editor, and penning many poems and stories for friends and family. She was a dedicated docent at the Western Reserve Historical Society and a loyal and active Smith Club of Cleveland member. She was a long-time member of the Country Club and the Cleveland Skating Club. Throughout her life, Joan took great care to demonstrate kindness, consideration and compassion to family and friends through thoughtful notes, gifts and gestures. Her concern for the underserved in our community inspired her support for many local social service agencies. Above all, Joan was devoted to her 15 children and grandchildren. The family prefers that those who wish may make remembrances in her name to Shoes and Clothes for Kids, 4614 Prospect Ave, Cleveland, OH 44103, The American Red Cross, 3747 Euclid Ave, Cleveland, OH, or Laurel School, 1 Lyman Circle, Shaker Hts., OH 44122. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, December 23 at 11:00am in Fairmount Presbyterian Church, 2757 Fairmount Blvd, Cleveland Hts., OH. Family interment at Lake View Cemetery.
