Joanna Helen Burgio was born in Catania, Sicily on July 10, 1913. She came to America with her parents, Rudolfo and Rosario, when she was a year old. She grew up in Cleveland, Ohio and graduated from East High School. Mrs. Kane passed away January 11th, 2010 at the age of 96. Joanna studied opera in Rome, Italy and graduated from St. Cecelia's Conservatory in Rome. In 1945, Joanna met Francis Elden Kane while he was serving as a warrant officer in the Ordinance Department of the US Army. They were married on August 9th, 1945. Joanna and Elden traveled extensively in Europe in the 1970's and 1980's. Joanna was fluent in several languages and acted as interpreter. She was also an accomplished artist, working in marble, clay and porcelain. Joanna designed and sewed beautiful gowns, coats and hats. Joanna Kane is survived by a daughter, Melani Brewer and a granddaughter, Megan Brewer of Cooper City, Florida. A Funeral Mass will be held in The Church of The Gesu, 2470 Miramar Blvd., University Hts., OH, Monday January 18th at 10:30 AM. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Cleveland, Ohio.
