John Farley

JOHN M. FARLEY, 80 of Cleveland Heights, OH died peacefully with family at his side on Tuesday, February 22, 2011. John was the beloved husband for 51 years to Dorothy Farley nee Stacy and the dear father of Anne Sherwin Tom of Pittsburg, PA; Joan Christie Mel of Bethesda, MD; and John O. Dorothy of Pittsburgh, PA and granddad to Annie and Will Christie. John was born in 1930, the only son of John Frances Farley and Lucile Farley nee Daszewski in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, NY. His father died when John was very young; his loving mother, grandmother and uncles raised him. John was a proud graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School before attending Syracuse University, graduating magna cum laude with a BCE Engineering degree. He continued his education at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, obtaining a Masters in Structural Engineering. Following graduation, John enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving as an Officer in the Civil Engineering Corp. Seabees, from 1954 to 1957 serving in Korea and Japan. John began his career at Jones and Laughlin Steel in 1957 as a development engineer at the Cleveland Works, devoting a long and successful career to the steel industry. During his 20-year tenure at Pittsburgh's J&L Steel headquarters, he held executive positions that varied from Vice President, Engineering and Research, to Raw Materials and Purchasing and Traffic. His career took him back to Cleveland in 1984, following the formation of LTV Steel after the merger of J&L and Republic Steel. He served as Vice Presidenta�"Research and Engineering and Vice Presidenta�"International Technology by 1991, leading LTV'S International Initiatives. He was a member of many professional steel and engineering organizations, and served as President of the Association of Iron and Steel Engineers in 1994. John was an avid runner, golfer, and curler. John traveled the world as part of his career, but found his greatest pleasure traveling with his wife. In his retirement, John continued a life devoted to service and community. He was a Eucharistic Minister for the Church of the Gesu in Shaker Heights, a member of the board of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Greater Cleveland and a member of the Central Committee of the County Republican National Committee, among many other civic groups. John was an active member of Mayfield Country Club. He was a devoted enthusiast of literature, music, old movies, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the love of his life, his wife, Dorothy. Befitting the proud American that he was, John died on the day of George Washington's birth. A Funeral Mass will be held Friday February 25th at 10:30 am in The Church of the Gesu, 2470 Miramar Blvd., University Hts., OH 44118.
