John Gentile

March 27, 1923 — October 26, 2013

John Gentile, Sr., 90, of Pepper Pike, Ohio, beloved husband of Doreen (nee Neale), loving father and grandfather passed away surrounded by his family on October 26, 2013. John was raised in Cleveland Heights. He was the youngest child of Benedetto and Rosalia Gentile (nee D'Ali) who emigrated from Sicily in 1913 and was preceded in death by his parents and by his 7 brothers and 3 sisters: Charlie, Sam, Ben, Lou, Joe, Tony, Al, Rosalie (Reeves), MaryAnn (Prokupek) and Theresa (Oswell). John is survived by his wife of 61 years, Doreen, his 4 children John (Marcia), Valerie Sachs (Chris), Donna Scicolone and Neale,10 grandchildren, Michael (Alisha), Marc, Leslie, Natalie, Olivia, Danielle, Monica, Lexie, Nick and Julianna and cousins, nephews and nieces.

John started his work career with Thompson Products, a predecessor corporation to TRW, in 1941. He was very committed to TRW and worked for the company for 44 years in a variety of positions until his retirement in 1985. While he loved working at TRW, travel and photography were his passions. John co-founded and ran the TRW Travel Club and later with his wife, Doreen, opened Astro Travel Service in 1971.

John had a travel "bucket list" before that term was widely known. He set out to see the world from an early age and took his family with him on many of his adventures. He travelled extensively through Europe, South America, the Caribbean, Africa, Asia and Australia. He cherished his trip to Rwanda walking through the mountain forests to watch the gorillas, he was enthralled by the expanse of the Serengeti, the peaks of Machu Picchu, the river trips through Eastern Europe and Russia, the Taj Mahal and the many wonders of Italy and Sicily. He memorialized his travels in beautiful photographs - many of those pictures hang today in the homes of family and friends. In later years, John and Doreen were able to continue their travel by cruising and every year for decades they hosted a Caribbean cruise for their entire family. John's love for his dear wife, Doreen, for his family, and for travel and photography are his legacy.

Many thanks to the staff and hospice of The Weils of Bainbridge for their compassionate and gentle care. The family suggests contributions to University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital, 2101 Adelbert Rd., Cleveland, OH 44106 or to the Western Reserve Land Conservancy, 3850 Chagrin River Rd., Moreland Hills, OH 44022-1131.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at 11 a.m. in the Marian Chapel at Church of the Gesu, 2470 Miramar Blvd., University Hts.
