John Young

John Cremer Young passed away peacefully on June 30, 2011. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of fifty-four years, Nancy Cutting Young. John was the dear father to Elizabeth Y. Boles Edgar, MacKenzie C. Young Nicki, Alice Y. Klug Darrell, Heather Y. Wiehe Oliver and the late John Cremer Young, Jr. He was the oldest brother to Wallace C. Young, James B. Young, and The late Frank B. Young. John was a loving Grandfather to Wendy B. Gordon, Edgar H. Boles III Michael Terrien, Mary B. Kraatz Erik, Elizabeth B. Freeman Douglas; Dietrich, Alexander and Marshall Klug; Travis, Elizabeth, Spencer and Grace Wiehe and Great Grandfather of Scarlet Kraatz. He was a favorite cousin, uncle and friend of many. John was born on May 30, 1926 in Cleveland, OH and was a longtime resident of Shaker Heights. He graduated from University School in 1944 and served two years in the Naval Armed Forces during the end of World War II. He graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree from Kenyon College where he became a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and a lifelong advocate of the college. John worked as a salesman for several chemical companies and started his own water treatment consulting company, "Young Environmental Services" in the 1980's. He was a dedicated Red Cross blood and platelet donor for over sixty years. During this time he donated over twenty-three gallons of blood. More than one hundred and eighty-five lives were saved. He was the recipient of many Red Cross awards and pins. John was an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Shaker Historical Society, Shaker 100, a Charter Member of the Shaker Schools Foundation, and "Big Bald Eagle" of the Indian Guides. He was a devoted fan of the Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Browns. When John was growing up he loved to spend his summers at Camp Monomoy, of the Cape Cod Sea Camps, swimming in the ocean and sailing. He also enjoyed playing soccer as the Goalie, ice skating, tennis and early morning jogs around Shaker Lakes. He loved to dance at the Fork & Fiddle Social Club and bowl with the Plymouth Church Men's Bowling League. He was a lifetime member of the Clean Plate Club. Most often you would see him walking hand in hand with his dear wife Nancy throughout the neighborhood.
