Longtime Cleveland Heights resident, Joseph “Joe” Martines, died November 17 at the Hospice of the Western Reserve. He is survived by his wife of 56 years Peggy (Maxon); children, Margaret, Joseph Jr., Matthew (Miyuki), and grandson, Michael. Joe was a son of the late Joseph and Mary (Serge) Martines, and brother of Santo (Sandy) Martines (deceased). He is survived by a sister Karen and brothers Francis (Frank) and Michael.
Joe was a graduate of John Adams High School, Cleveland, where he was class president and a state champion wrestler, and Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he also was on the wrestling team.
He taught Social Studies at Cleveland’s South High School, where he met his wife, and spent several years as a stockbroker before he found his life’s vocation in the buying, selling and repair of antique clocks. He was an early member of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors. He often sold his clocks in his wife’s shop, Martines Antiques in Chagrin Falls; the pair were well-known throughout the eastern United States where they traveled extensively selling clocks and other antiques. Joe loved to travel and made many trips to Europe and Asia.
Family services are private; the family plans a Celebration of Life event at a future date.
Those who wish may make contributions in his name to The Hospice of the Western Reserve, PO Box 72101, Cleveland, OH 44192.
