Judith Markus Hardy died peacefully on November 5, 2013. She was born in Cleveland, graduated from John Adams High School, Miami University of Ohio and received her Master of Library Science degree from Western Reserve University.
Judy began her library career at age 16 as a volunteer page at the Shaker Heights Public Library. After receiving her degree from Western Reserve, she worked at the library of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. She later returned to Cleveland and worked at the Allen Library of Medicine, where, among others, her responsibilities included outreach programs to small hospital libraries, including the old Forest City Hospital. She later returned to the Shaker Heights Library where she directed Technical Services.
On retirement, Judy and her husband, Dr. Russell Hardy moved to The Sea Ranch, a small community on a remote part of the California coast. There she put her professional skills to work, acting as a volunteer advisor to a small community library in Point Arena, CA.
In addition to her career as a librarian, Judy was an active volunteer, where, at various times she belonged to the Junior Committee of the Cleveland Orchestra and the Junior League. Her first project for the Junior Committee of the Orchestra was disposing of the old bus that once served as a store at Blossom. She accomplished this by managing to convince a Portage County farmer to haul the bus away.
Her first assignment for the Junior League led to joining a mediation panel (Autocap) for the Cleveland Automobile Dealers Association. This panel, which she chaired for many years, attempted to resolve disputes between dealers and their customers; as a result, Judy became a self-taught expert on the nuances of automobile repairs.
An enthusiastic tennis player, she played for many years at The Cleveland Skating Club, and also belonged to the Intown Club.
She leaves behind her husband Dr. Russell Hardy, daughters Jennifer Van Hook of Venice, CA and Caroline Emmet of Shaker Hts. She also leaves a brother, Alan Markus, and three grandchildren, Charles, Eliza and Greer.
The family prefers that those who wish make donations to Planned Parenthood of Ohio, 206 East St., Columbus, OH 43215. Private Family Service. Friends and family will gather at her daughter's home.
