June Merkel

June 15, 1917 — February 6, 2012

JUNE GLENDINNING MERKEL of Gates Mills died peacefully at home on February 6, 2012. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio on June 15, 1917. She was the daughter of Dr. William Bell Glendinning, a prominent Cleveland physician and Virginia Mathieson, who was a nurse. She was the devoted wife of the late William E. Merkel and loving mother of the late William E. Toby Merkel, Jr. She was the sister of Marion Booth, William Glendinning, Dr. Paul Glendinning, Adelaide Briggs and Virginia McKee. She graduated from Flora Stone Mather College CWRU and had an important role in C. Merkel & Sons of Mentor, a wholesale greenhouse and one of Mentor Ohio's longest family-owned businesses opened in 1896. She ran the business during World War II and stayed involved until its sale in 2005. Mrs. Merkel was a refined and elegant lady who gave many a helping hand. She valued honesty, faithfulness and integrity in all her relationships. She was an avid reader, gardener, golfer and bowler and loved animals, wildlife and beauty. Mrs. Merkel was a 60-year member of the Country Club and on her 90th birthday, joined the Chagrin Valley Hunt Club. She and her family were former members of the Quail Ridge Country Club of Delray, Florida. Her final moments were attended by her nieces, Betsy Mike Nogueira and Ann Mason. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and their children; as well as dear friends including Towar Chris Vilas and Cynthia W. Halle. The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 300 E 185th Street, Cleveland, OH 44119 or Hawken School, 12465 County Line Rd, Gates Mills, OH 44040. A Memorial Service will be held in the Mausoleum of Lake View Cemetery, 12316 Euclid Ave, Cleveland, OH on Thursday, May 17 at 4pm.
