Kate Marston

Kate was born December 23rd, 1972 and adopted by Ann and Dale Honroth.  She grew up in Hudson, Ohio with her mom and her brother Eric in the same house where her mom still lives.

As a young girl, Kate played softball and took ballet lessons, and then later studied jazz dance and played left full back in field hockey, even playing for the state championship (but unfortunately losing) in 1989. She talked often about the trips to California and Las Vegas with the dance troop, and had stories for days about field hockey games and teammates.  She was still good friends with many of these ladies up until her death.  She loved camping in the woods at her dad's house in Bath, and going to every Grateful Dead show she could.  Kate was also a debutante at the 1991 Akron Children’s Hospital Charity Ball, where she was presented by her father - a memory she cherished.

Kate graduated from Hudson High School in 1991, and went off to THE Ohio State University to pursue a degree in physics.  Although she didn't graduate, she could have gone toe to toe against Stephen Hawking (one of her idols) any day.  Even without a degree to back it up, Kate was smart.  REALLY smart.

While in Columbus, Kate met and became great friends with Greg Marston.  They became inseparable during the Summer of 1994, and began dating - a love affair that would last 27 years. Kate spent the remainder of her time in Columbus bartending, and her passion for the hospitality industry was born.  She and Greg would talk often of someday opening a Bed and Brunch, because breakfast was too early.

In 1997, Kate moved with Greg to New York City.  At first, the size of the City terrified her, but within a few weeks, she became accustomed to the hustle and bustle and became a true New Yorker, although at Yankee Stadium, she still (usually) quietly rooted for the Indians.  It was also at this time that Kate's love of hockey got Greg interested, and they would go to New York Rangers games at Madison Square Garden together.

Kate and Greg married May 16th, 1998 at First Presbyterian Church in Hudson.  As a girl, she dreamed of her wedding there one day.  The reception, at Fairlawn Country Club, was a party for the ages, featuring a conga line on the golf course, the band putting on Willie Nelson wigs and playing into the morning hours, and guests dancing on the tables.  Life around Kate and her family was an adventure.

In 1999, Kate left the hospitality industry, having bartended and waited tables in a number of New York City restaurants to work at Planet Payment, where she eventually because the assistant to the CEO.  Her grit and determination were instrumental in the success of the company.

In the Summer of 2001, Kate and Greg decided it was time to stop renting and buy a place, settle down, and think about starting a family.  They moved to Park Slope, Brooklyn, and would spend lazy Saturdays and Sundays in Prospect Park.  It was there that they would adopt the first of their rescue Pit Bulls, Soba, who would accompany them everywhere, and remained with them until 2017.  Kate thought she'd be a lifelong New Yorker, but in 2004, there was an offer too good to refuse - Greg was offered a spot to help start a company in Cleveland, and Kate was able to stop working and attend culinary school - her dream.

In March of 2004, Kate and Greg moved, and within months, Kate was enrolled in Culinary school at Cuyahoga Community College.  Her skills caught the attention of her instructors, who believed she had what it took to become a great chef.  During this time, her step mother, Sharon, suffered an accident at her horse barn, and upon visiting her in the hospital, Kate decided the time to start a family was now.

Kate and Greg's first boy, Carter,  was born 10 months later and was the love of her life.  Kate would soon return to school taking evening classes, and Greg and Carter would come to pick her up - something even her instructors and classmates loved, as they got to see her beautiful boy.

The family moved to their house in Shaker Heights in 2006, and Gavin, their second boy, was born in 2008.  Kate always wanted two boys.  She said she was born to be a mother of boys.  She was right.  She played with Legos, talked about Minecraft, told jokes, and wrestled.  She was a brilliant mom.  And she was just getting started.

Living in Shaker, it made sense that the boys would learn to ice skate, so she took them to classes.  An interest in hockey followed, and first Carter started playing, followed soon by Gavin.  Kate hated the term "hockey mom", but it fit her to a T.  She loved to watch her boys play.  She was the most loyal fan in the stands, and rarely missed a game of either one.

Kate eventually returned to culinary school to finish her degree, but soon decided that her career in culinary wasn't destined to be in a restaurant, but rather running her own small business, which she founded in 2019 - Rina's.  She made the best tomato sauce in the world.  Seriously, Ask around.  It was the best.  She sold it to people all around the US, and was considering expanding into a larger commercial kitchen.  The only thing that made her more proud than HER company and the title Chef was her boys.

In the end, she went to almost 40 Grateful Dead shows, bartended for rock stars, whitewater rafted and ziplined in the rain forest in Costa Rica, hiked on Alaskan glaciers and snorkeled in freezing Alaskan waters, took a helicopter ride through the Grand Canyon, skied western powder, rode a horse through the Rocky Mountains, tracked down her biological mother, navigated the New York City subway system like a pro without a map, and ate her pizza properly (folded down the middle). She was a loyal friend and late night grief counselor to countless many who needed somebody to talk to.  She was a beloved presence at the rink.  She was a chef and entrepreneur.  She was a sister, a daughter, and an aunt. She was the best mother of boys the world had ever known.  And she was the most beautiful, kind, loving wife a husband could have ever asked for.

Kate passed away peacefully August 10th, 2021.  She will be forever missed.
