Kenneth Fleming

July 19, 1944 — April 11, 2011

Ken was a Real Estate Broker for more than thirty years and devoted much of his adult life to his vision of a revitalized Cleveland. Ken was a Marine Corps Fighter Pilot who flew F4 Phantoms in the late sixties/early seventies. Raised in North Stamford, Connecticut, he was an older brother to ÒDocÓ, Cici and Mary who all tried to emulate his athletic skill and sense of fun. At his alma mater, Baldwin-Wallace, Ken met his wife, Karen Piper Fleming, his most enduring relationship. They eventually settled in Shaker Heights, Ohio and raised their two sons, David and Michael. One of his proudest accomplishments was his friendships and work relationships with his sons, who share his enthusiasm for Cleveland. Tory Barron, his new daughter-in-law, immediately won his heart and his family expanded in October 2010 when David and she married. He became the cherished patriarch of both the Fleming and Piper families. Ken delighted in bringing people together. He entertained on his sail boat and loved to show his passengers the view of the city he loved. He shared every cup of coffee and every Canadian Club one or the other was always in hand with a dear friend. His awareness that life is short motivated him to co-organize a yearly Marine Corps Birthday celebration and fueled his constant intention to nurture and renew friendships. To that end he established the League of Endangered Gentlemen for his Baldwin-Wallace fraternity brothers. He enjoyed the opportunity to be an advanced jet fighter instructor to eleven different students in the Marine Corps and, later, to mentor numerous people at the beginning of their real estate careers. At the end of his life when most physical skills and even his huge smile failed him, KenÕs eyes still brightened wide when a friend or family member entered the room and he struggled to stand and hug them when they said goodbye. He was indeed an endangered gentleman. The family prefers that those who wish may make contributions in his name to The CJD Foundation, PO Box 5312, Akron., OH 44334. Funeral Services will be held 3 pm, Friday, April 15th at BROWN-FORWARD, 17022 CHAGRIN BLVD., SHAKER HTS., OH.
