Lenore Victoria Buford July 29, 1930 to December 23, 2014



On December 23, 2014, a dear friend cousin, mentor, and scholar, Dr. Lenore Victoria Buford passed away surrounded by friends and her adopted family, lovely piano music and singing. She lived her life on her own terms, and she exited this world her way: peacefully!!



Lenore was born in Louisville, Kentucky on July 27, 1930, the daughter of William C. Buford and Alzada Singleton Buford. She is survived by her "sister" Jane Black Goepper of Cincinnati (OH); "son" Robert A. Valente (fiancée Joan Morgenstern), daughters "LuAnn" Lausé (Neal), "Vivian" Sims (Hope, granddaughter), her cousins Lenice Giagiana(Hini), Richard Gibbons, Leslie Wade(Dr. Jerome)and a treasured group of friends.



Lenore's cremated remains will be interred, in part, with her mother at the, Louisville, KY, the love of her life, Hugh E. Rinehart (Lenore passed on Hugh's birthday) Uniopolis, Ohio, and the remainder of her ashes will be dispersed according to her wishes by her family in a private gathering.



Upon graduating from Central High School in Louisville (KY), she would purse her love of journalism at Fisk University, Nashville, TN, earning B.A. in English and history. Her mother's graduation gift would be a year in France and that would prove to an inspiration to the rest of Lenore's life.



Over the next two year she would spend in Paris, where she would continue studying at Alliance Française and Sorbonne in Paris; writing articles for the Parisiane published in the United States.



Lenore returned to Ohio in 1953 to earn her M. A. in Romance Languages at Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. Her education career would included the following:Talladega College, Southern University. University of Nebraska.



Lenore was recruited back to to Case Western to complete her PhD. in Romance Language and remained there as an assistant professor for 4 years.



In 1971, she the first head of foreign languages at Cuyahoga Community College.In 1977, she took a leave of absence to become a Yale Humanities Fellow on a National Endowment for the Humanities award. Turning down a position at Yale, she returned to Tri-C in 1978 retiring from the classroom in 1992.



In 1956, she became involved with The Experiment in International Living leading students and faculty to other countries to live with local families. She would meet the love of her life in 2000, Hugh Rinehart, by connecting with him, also an Experimenter, to travel to the reunion in Vermont.



Her tireless devotion to a number of her passions; cruising24 times on Crystal Cruises and she would dub herself, Cruise Queen of Cuyahoga County; Zonta Club of Cleveland, The Cleveland Foundation original African Outreach Committee, establishing The Alzadea Singleton Davis Scholarship (her mother); donated a practice room at Rainey in memory of her mother; also donated her Steinway; Cleveland Playhouse Board for 18 years Board;26 year season ticket holder.
